Popular Twilight fanfic really romantic suspense novel with names changed

Found this on Smart Bitches. It seems a popular Twilight Fanfic, which is no longer at the Pit, was plagarized from a romantic suspense novel with only the names changed to Edward and Bella.http://www.cynthiaeden.com/romance/plagiarism-sucks/

Oh the plus side, the author is getting more readers.

I'm surprised that it doesn't happen more often, since you're dealing with flat characters and living props. Just do a find-and-replace on any romantic text and viola! Instant badfic.

Yeah, count me as not surprised either. Still shitty though. I think it's hilarious that the plagiarist apparently included tons of author's notes on the writing process though...was it an effort to convince everyone else, or herself?

It's not that rare. Quite often, fanbrats copy the canon material of their own fandom.

At least that makes some sense, as they are writing stories set in that fandom and the readers will (usually) recognize where it came from. Copying from an entirely different work, especially one that has no connection to your fandom, doesn't make sense.

Having similar ideas and/or similar plotlines is one thing. Copying someone else's published work word for word and posting it under your own name is pretty damn ballsy.

The story's been removed from fanfiction.net. I'm kind of sad because I wanted to read gushing reviews.

One of the few times I actually reported a story at the Pit was when someone typed up the first three chapters of the first Harry Potter book, made no changes except changing "Harry" to "Harry and Lukus" {sic, sic, sic}, and posted it under the title "The Potter Brothers and the Sorcerer's Stone".

^ Hahahaha oh man. At least that Rose Potter thing also changed everything to first person.

That is worth a double facepalm, for sure. Did the author seriously think no one would notice that they've copied the novel verbatim, or did they not care?


The concept has the potential to be awesome though... if the brother was Harry's evil twin, and their abilities counteracted each other, and there was a triangular power struggle between Harry, his evil brother and Voldemort. Hm.

You'd think someone who goes through the trouble of turning Harry into a conjoined twin would have given these issues some thought.
