These guys are really, really sad people, just like people who use RealDolls because they think they can't find love (or even just sex) with a living human being. I recall a story of some country now allowing for marriages to dating sim characters.

What surprises me is that this isn't an isolated thing. It's always amazed me that a culture capable of producing some of the raunchiest, most implausible sex in existence appears to be hung up on the concept of sex in real life, to the point where it's apparently easier to fall in love with a doll than have to deal with falling in love with a real person.

Wow. I knew the Japanese are, by nature, very controlled and very much bound by social mores, but given that you can't even approach someone you like personally and have to do it via stealth, it's a wonder anyone ever manages to marry and reproduce.

I can see how the Western approach to sex would horrify them, just like the girl who wrote the article couldn't get a handle on the whole 'shower' business being a coded way of the guy saying he wanted to have sex with her, or deal with being expected to be completely passive during sex.

The porn makes sense-you'd have to have SOME sort of outlet for your sex drive. What strikes me as odd is that actual sex is apparently never spoken about, but pornography of all kinds seems to be readily available, and there's no stigma attached to buying it.

Really, they don't. Japan's population is getting increasingly older without any real influx of immigrants or sufficient native births to add to the workforce. And then there's stuff like Retired Husband Syndrome and other strange ills caused pretty much entirely by their culture.

What really makes highly uncomfortable is that of all of the characters Okayama chose....he was attracted to Sasami. She is supposed to be 10 years old and actually looks it! Why would an eighteen year old, if this guy is remembering or reporting the time period correctly, be drawn to a little girl?
