- AUSTIN, Tex. — After three days of turbulent meetings, the Texas Board
of Education on Friday approved a social studies curriculum that will put a conservative stamp on history and economics textbooks, stressing the superiority of American capitalism, questioning the Founding Fathers’ commitment to a purely secular government and presenting Republican political philosophies in a more positive light. Such changes? - The Slave Trade will now be known as "The Atlantic Triangular Trade" (Because them blacks LOVED being slavesminority servants!) - Everytime Obama is mentioned, it will be with his full name, "Barrack Hussein Obama" (Because HE'S FROM KENYA AND CAN'T BE PREZ SHOW US THE REEEAAAALLLL BIRTH CERTIFICATE MR SECRET MUSLIM) - Taxation will be taught as limits towards private enterprise (Because taxes = socialism, BUT DON'T YOU DARE CUT MEDICARE) - Absolutely no mention of Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers' desire for separation of Church and State (Because States married to Religion are peaceful and prosperous- oh wait ) - High school students will have to learn about leading conservative groups from the 1980s and 1990s in U.S. history – but not about liberal or minority rights groups that are identified as such (Can't have them socialists looking good, can we?) -Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan are glorified ("You see kids, Regan didn't sap the wealth out of America, he.... er.... "redistributed" it!") [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Actually, they compromised on that one - he will be listed as "Barack H. Obama". My favorite is that 5th graders will be asked to "explain the importance of morality and ethics in maintaining a functional free enterprise system." Because 5th graders (which would be about 10-11 years old) know all about ethics and morality, amirite?

| You know, this is making me glad I live in a conservative state for the first time. Because, we're like conservative here, but we're not crazy. Texas is making everyone else look good by comparison. | |

This. This so much. Too bad that we're going to be using the same bullshit textbooks. :-\

| This makes me see red (no pun intended). California is considering a bill forbidding the use of Texas textbooks in California public schools. I hope it passes. | |

Those who do not want to learn will fail, even if the Lord Himself were to write their textbooks. Those who Do want to learn will do so despite textbooks written in Pig Latin transliterated into Kanji. Some of your economic policies on the other hand....

Except that you're forgetting that people, especially children, are susceptible to the first version of events to which they are presented - especially if it's in An Official Textbook, touted by their Official Teachers. So thanks, but it's a lot more complex than that.

So thanks, but it's a lot more complex than that. and I'm fairly certain that it's more complex than 'Conservatives just want to destroy America.'

If conservatives understood nuance the US wouldn't be in the mess it's in now.

| Both the Washington Post and the NY Times have been misreporting this story. Let me leave these here:
Ann Althouse compares the WaPo article and the actual textbook.
JustOneMinute does a similar job on the NY Times article.

JustOneMinute does a similar job on the NY Times article. I haven't been using those sources. I've been getting it straight from the horse's mouth - the actual proposals as written and approved by the Texas BOE.

| This is really bad. I remember taking classes at a community college in the U.S. where everyone else in the class believed a lot of incorrect things both about U.S. and world history. When the professor pointed out some of these mistakes, the students insisted that their highschool teachers had told them what they knew and very little could be done to change their minds. If kids in Texas are taught what's in those books, that's what they're going to believe until they're given significant reason not to.
It's easy to tell someone not to believe things they read on the internet, but much harder when it's their textbooks and schools telling them these things.

It's hard getting them to not believe what they read on the Internet, too. A student got mad at me today when I looked at his project on Obama and pointed out that, no, Obama was not born in Kenya and the birth certificate he'd printed was a fake.
