Naw... Sony's pretty good at being incompetent all by itself... Just look at the PS3's launch... And it's follow-through... And its current library of games... and its future library of games...

Why'd I buy a PS3 again?

I got a PS3 for christmas. I've never gone online with it. Does that mean it's still crashed?

Also, the PS3 was the system of choice for my husband's Ratchet & Clank games, and because The Last Guardian (so far as I know) will be PS3 exclusive.

That point is no longer valid, I give you the price of exhibit A and the price of exhibit B
The £185 difference could have been easily put towards Exhibit C or Exhibit D.

The concept for MAG sounds cool. I mean, 256-player TDM? (Considering that my style of play is to hole-up on far off places and snipe, hoping no-one notices the 2 or 3 kills I'll get) sounds good.

MGS4 Sounds good, once you get past the massive amount of Cutscene bollocks.

Still, the 360 was half the price and (IMHO) a better investment.

Just to pop in my defense here... I fell out of love with Nintendo shortly before the N64 came out... Or rather just after the N64 (Or was it the Gamecube?) came out well in the shadow of the Playstation-1, which I loved to bits. Befoe then my SNES was my baby!

I can honestly say that I didn't know about the X-Box's reliability problems untill well into the death-throws of my PS2, and I'd replaced that twice by then so I couldn't really complain.

I think I just grew 'Brand Blinkers' for Sony after my PS1 and 2 gave me so much fun!

Unless you're a die-hard fan of anything, why would you even be looking at an entry in a series with a "4" in the title? The game couldn't possibly just be catering to those of us who want to see insanely long cutscenes about characters we've developed ridiculous emotional attachments to for three games already...

Wow, lots of selective interpretation going on here; you're rebelling against the media when the media is actually right.

Statistically, PS3's have a much, much, much lower overall failure rate. And the Wii IS for casual gamers, because all the big developers who make games non-casuals care about have, over the last six months, either announced they're not going to make games for it because they have no audience, or have announced they're going to STOP making games for it because no one who owns the thing is buying their non-casual stuff. Umbrella/Darkside Chronicals, Extraction, Modern Warfare Reflex, Madword, No More Heroes? All critically acclaimed, all lauded as examples of what the Wii can do with maturity. All vast, vast, vast undersellers, some just performing under expectations, some failing to the point of being flops. There is no market for non-casual games on the Wii, and selection is thus starting to dry up really quickly. The president of the company has said out-loud, to the face of the gaming press, that he thinks this is a problem and the system is stalling out because of it. He actuall describes it as the "good will" that was there being gone; meaning the impression that the system would actually be the revolution it was originally named as has faded. It simply isn't.

Part of the problem is that the Wii just isn't, whether all the Nintendo lifers like it or not, what everyone thought it was. It's not a massive innovation to gaming. The motion controller is not god's gift to innovation. It is very rarely used in any sort of interesting way that can't be replicated by pushing a button to achieve the same function on a standard controller. It's not virtual reality like everyone treated it as, and like FPS fans wanted it to be (oh god, FPS games on the Wii, oh god.) I still say Trauma Center is the single best use of the thing on the system, and Wii Motion Plus has done little to add any real innovation, probably because it hasn't existed since the console first came out.

Other M is a Nintendo property, so everyone would go gaga for it even if it was just Metroid Tamagachi.

...actually, I would want that even more.

Also, War for Cybertron is worth getting worked up over on any system about as much as a tax audit. Seriously, War for Cybertron?

Anyway, now for my own fanboyism: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Exclusives that aren't Crackdown, Halo, Halo Wars or Halo Reacharound. Also, not paying for multiplayer. Fun fact; console games have no dedicated servers, which means the cost the companies pay to keep their multiplayer service going are negligible, which means the money you pay for Live Gold is about a 90% mark-up. And count on it being raised in 2010.

And yes, there is flagging support for Wii games outside of the games your mum plays when there is nothing on telly, which is why Nintendo are trying to pull out the big guns this year in an attempt to pull some of that back. I don't know if it'll work, but dear god I'm gonna enjoy the attempt.

The problem here is that Nintendo resolutely refuses to step up their games in the two areas it would help the most: Stronger online and third-party support.

More Third party would = Yay.
Online? Meh I see no problems with it.
Unless you mean in games, which goes kinda against Nintendo "Get your mates/family together and play" mentality if you think about it, how many arms had to be twisted to get what there is into Brawl and Kart we may never know.
It would be lovely, but very unlikely.

Yes, I was generalizing, obviously I believed in the course of making an argument that there are absolutely no exceptions. None of those have strong enough plots to have continuity lockout. The Final Fantasy series, in particular, is not even a series.

"But if some long-running series have continuity lockout and some don't, how can I be expected to know which ones do and don't without playing them?" Not an excuse; the Internet does exist. If you want to know whether or not you'd appreciate the third or fourth game in a series without starting from the beginning, research it.

That doesn't make it capable of holding up an argument for why we should take the Wii seriously, though. Anecdotal evidence is not evidence.

That would be great, because right now all I see for the Wii is Metroid Prime 3, Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, and a bunch of games like Cooking Mama or Sonic and Mario Olympics. There's also a couple of REALLY shitty RPGs (Tales of Symphonia sucked bad enough, who thought there should be a sequel?). Besides that, you have games like Heatseeker, which was totally badass but also halfassed. HURF BURF ONLINE MULTIPLAYER? FUCK YOU HOW BOUT NO MULTIPLAYER?!?!?

You also see stuff like CoD gutted (online multiplayer where you can play with people you haven't FUCKING FRIENDLISTED ALREADY is a BIG part of those games), and stuff like Guitar Hero which isn't any different from what I could get on the X-Box.

Watching Nintendo fail the Wii up is like watching Alex Rodriguez in the 2007 playoffs. They could do SO MUCH BETTER but would rather pound out crappy family friendly games "en masse." Even by "family friendly's" already painfully low standards, some of these games are pathetic. I mean, Mario is family friendly, AND entertaining. Most of this stuff is just family friendly.

PS: Wii Sports was a good little demo disc to toss in on opening day to show off the motion controls. Just because you add another dozen minigames does not make it a legitimate game.

Speaking of minigames, has there been a Mario Party for the Wii yet? scratch THAT could be badass, and would benefit tremendously from proper online play (Proper Online Play = Something Nintendo hasn't figured out).

It wasn't part of my argument, in fact I bearly made one.
Actually you made the argument for me. You outlined a strong selection of more mature and 'hardcore' games, a good chunk of which are 3rd party, that didn't do so well on the wii. Why didn't they do so well?
Because no bugger bought them, Why? Because nobody takes the wii remotely seriously even when it tries. Why? Because of the media and people like you.
Ta btw, you put it better than I ever could.

I actually sort of agreed with this post except that I wouldn't say the Wii is "failing". The PS3 is failing over and over what with the shitty launch titles and unimpressive set of games that can be played much better on a PC, but the Wii has some pretty solid titles which Mikey mentioned+Okami (which was was easier to play on the Wii)+Punch-Out!!.

Also Wario Ware=Mario Party for the Wii sort of. That game is crazy fun at parties.

Proud Wii owner here saying... I'll never understand this obsession with online play. If I really wished to be insulted by a 12-year-old brat living the high life with mom's credit card, I'd be playing Team Fortress 2 on a PC like God meant it to be, and that got old pretty fast.

If owning an XBox means getting up close and personal with MS costumer service and a PS3 means getting a Blu-Ray player for twice the price, then fuck so-called hardcore gaming, because it's staring to look like a scam.

I like the 360's online play for playing Rock Band. I've only gotten insulted once on there, and it was after I beat what was probably a 12-year-old in a guitar face-off. I laughed and put him on my avoid list. No big deal.

For FPS's though, I can definitely see why you'd want an open online play system. It's a lot easier to get games going, for both co-op and versus. Microsoft's customer service people have been very nice to me thus far, not that I've had a problem... other than the aforementioned RROD. Like everything else, preferences vary.

EDIT: Correction. The other online playtime I've done on the 360 was with Left 4 Dead, which was hysterically funny at times. :D
