Lysistrata- ending wars one neglected penis at a time. (sort of NSFW? -ish?)

I love this play so much it hurts. For those off you unfamiliar with this play, its a greek comedy by Aristophanes about one women who organizes the rest of the women to enact her plan to end the Peloponnesian war. How, you ask? By withholding not only the city's resources, but by withholding their own greatest resource.

You guessed it. No sex for hubbys until they end the war. :D They basically plock themselves and the money away until the men can't take it anymore. And, as it turns out... neither can the women.

Oh, gods yes. Aristophanes is fucking awesome. I've very fond of The Frogs, myself, because he clearly just made it up as he went along, not bothering to actually plot the entire thing out in advance.

I have never read any Greek plays. I may start now.

I had a test once in a dramatic theory and crit class that asked for an essay on whether Aeschylus or Aristophanes had a more favorable opinion of women, based on Agamemnon and Lysistrata. I went with Aeschylus, on the grounds that Aristophanes was writing a farce. "Even stupid women know that war is dumb!"

Euripides, of course, was the closest to a modern feminist. Nobody else was going to write Medea as a sympathetic character.
