So, I watched Let the Right One In today. Not my taste really, a bit slow paced with a touch of pedobear material in it. But other people apparently liked it.
Basically, it's covers the love story between a 12 year old boy and a female vampire that was turned at 12 (hence the pedobear territory), and is generally serious, character driven, plodding and a bit boring if I'm honest, for more than the first hour. But then there's a scene where a woman, turned by the vampire (she was driven off before she could kill her), is attacked by cats. And it looks like this:
I'm sorry, but in the middle of this really serious film, why do you put something in that looks like a live action version of a Terry Gilliam animation? It didn't really add a huge piece to the plot, and even if it did, it could've been directed differently, and the film resumes being slow and plodding afterwards. It's almost like they started out trying to write a comedy, changed their minds, but still had the cat scene recorded and wanted to put it in.
Couldn't take the film seriously after that.
Anyone have other examples of this?

Was she actually being attacked by cats, or did she just go crazy?

I always thought the deer attacking scene in the remake of The Ring was incredibly bizarre. Yes, they chalked it up to the father having all those antlers in the basement, but really... What the hell? There was never a scene like that in the original.

She was really being attacked.
In the end:
Spoiler:
She realised what she'd been turned into a vampire and got the doctor to kill her by opening the blinds in her hospital ward during the day, causing her to spontaneously combust

Compare to the original scene;
Plus, the crappy CG just looks really fake sitting next the puppets and people in costumes.

On the other hand, the edited scene provides one answer to "Why is Boba Fett so popular?" The craptastic space pop starts up, the terrible CGI is making the audience wince, and then it cuts to Boba Fett crossing his arms and tilting his head as if to say "WTF is this shit?" Perfect timing. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I have never seen a movie with a cat attack scene in it that could be taken seriously, for the simple reason that you can't train cats to attack. Ergo, the only way to make them 'look' like they're attacking is for stagehands off-screen to throw them at the victim. Which never looks realistic-you can tell the cats are pissed at being treated this way, and any injuries inflicted on the person they're 'attacking' are because they're trying to get the fuck off-screen.

Oh, if you think that Eli being turned at twelve years old is pedobearish, you should read the book. She's not a girl there, she's a boy who was castrated (in a lovingly detailed scene) as part of being vampirized or something, I don't know, my eyes were glazing over at that point.
The man who's helping "her" get blood is more or less said to be a pedophile, though he's disgusted at himself for it.
Spoiler:
Then when he's turned into a zombie, he rapes Eli. I think. Again, eyes glazing over. Before that, the guy has poured acid on his face, fallen down nine stores, and torn a guy apart with his bare hands, so he's quite a mess. What's the only thing people take note of when they see this bloody, faceless, smashed in THING wobbling along? THAT HE HAS A BONER.
And about that woman who gets attacked by cats,
Spoiler:
she's an ex-prostitute who has a rather sweet relationship with an alcoholic trying to recover. Following the cat attack, she ends up in the hospital and he comes to visit her. He wants them to start over with some money he's saved away. She's very moved but tries to explain that it can't ever be, because she's become a vampire. She asks him to kill her. Of course, he thinks she's gone (temporarily, he hopes) nuts from the cats and the fall down the stairs, and refuses. It's a very emotional, tender scene. He then goes outside. The woman smiles wistfully, then asks the nurse to open the blinds. The sunlight sets the woman on fire and her lover runs in as he hears the screaming.
Then it's said in the narration that the woman was writhing and squirming in pain (quoted from memory of the Swedish original) "causing her night gown to be pushed up, revealing her genitals."
WHY was that necessary?
Almost everyone I know loves the book and the movie. All I could think about when I read was that the author desperately needed to get laid.

American History X. Great movie, with the sole exception of one scene. Say it with me now: "it was his daddy's fault." What's Hollywood's problem with the idea that some people might just be complete assholes without anyone's help?

Re: Let the Right One in, my review from Goodreads:
Quote :
This was a slow start for me. It took some time to get interested in Oskar after his introduction as a twelve-year-old boy who pees his pants and fantasizes about murdering his classmates. However, the slow unfolding of his life, and the lives of those around him, in the light of unsolved murders and the strange little girl next door, was absolutely gripping. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Håkan the pedobear is one of the creepier elements of the book. I was cheering for the poor kid who ended up bashing Håkan's head to a pulp, even though the kid, himself, was no winner.
Maybe it was a translation issue, but I don't remember any mention of genitals in the hospital burning scene. I also don't remember much detail in the castration scene, just a mention of a hot iron and pain in a sparse sentence or two. It could be that the Swedish original is much more graphic.

If they changed that bit in the translation, it was certainly no loss. Ick, ick, ick...

I literally just finished reading the book. Håkan was a disgusting pervert who made my skin crawl. I much prefered the movie Håkan since he
Spoiler:
isn't a pedophile in the movie and he dies after Eli drinks his blood and lets him fall out the window. In the book there are endless scenes of the gooey zombie!Håkan still lusting after Eli. Yuck! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
