The city hall clerk made the announcement Friday. The election is scheduled for Oct. 27.
Ford became an international celebrity last year after acknowledging using crack cocaine in a "drunken stupor" following months of denials. He returned to work in June after a rehab stint for drugs and alcohol.
Huffington Post Canada explains that Rob Ford's brother, Doug Ford, will take his place in the mayoral race. The most surprising element of this story is that they're letting Ford's brother take his slot in the elections. I didn't think that kind of thing was legal.

| But he can't quit! He's the only Canadian politician most Americans can name. Mention Stephen Harper to most Americans and all you get is a blank stare. Rob Ford is someone everybody can identify. I just hope he announces plans to run for Prime Minister. | |
