Man burns home after his mom throws out his giant robot collection.
Quote :
A Japanese man has pleaded guilty to burning down his family home after his mother threw away some of his favourite robot toys.
Yoshifumi Takabe told Kobe District Court in western Japan he became suicidal after losing the figures, which he says were partners he wanted to spend his life with.
... Huh?
Did... did he love them in that way?
Granted, it is a dick move for his mom to just pack them up and throw them out like yesterday's trash. But burning down the house? Now you don't have a house to live in anymore, dumbass.
Quote :
The 30-year-old, who lived with his mother, torched the family home in retaliation, saying he wanted to die with his robots in the fire.
Quote :
His mother had long complained that Takabe was cluttering the house with enough toys to fill at least 300 boxes.
The blaze on August 9 last year completely destroyed their two-story wooden house, but no-one was injured.
Let's hope he gets some counseling and mental help.

I was going to post this, but I completely forgot.
Only in Japan... only in Japan. Even though some of those Gundam figurines can be rather expensive.

I noticed he failed to achieve his true goal of dying in the fire with his beloved robots. Sloppy, that. Odd how one's self-preservation instincts kick in when confronted with a massive blaze.

I'm assuming all the remaining robots went down in the blaze, though. Good job, man. Now your entire harem is gone.

But his robots had been thrown away, so, shouldn't he have set fire to the landfill?
There was a thread a while ago on a modelling site which I hang around - a guy was pissed that his models got constantly broken because other people in the house weren't careful around them. The replies were enough to fill the average sane persone with a feeling of extreme uneasiness. My 0.2 $ ("is there something that your wife and sons cannot tell you, so they take out their frustration on your models?") were lost in a choir of "Break their stuff! Snap their CDs in two! Rip apart their designer clothes! That'll teach them!" Yeah, that'll teach them to escalate, in case they hadn't already figured it out for themselves.
Conclusion: modellers, including me, are socially disfunctional jerks.

At this point I am pretty sure this guy was/is mentally ill. Hoarding is a for realsies problem, guys. I know a clinical hoarder personally, and these people need psychological help, not people tossing their stuff out without their consent. My guess is when some of his toys were toss he paniced about the loss of control over his environment. Thinking that if he did not do something all his stuff would be taken away from him, he set the house on fire because it was something he could control (sort of). Not a rational decision.
Come to think, between being 30-year-old living with his mother, owning 300 some odd boxes of robot toys, and being Japanese, he sound like a Hikikomori to me. From what I understand the Japanese in general have trouble with enabling their metally ill children instead of getting them help because they are embaressed to admit their kids are sick.
Then again, I am not a pychologist and even if I was I could not make a diagnosis from a very short news article. Just throwing it out there.
