US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have agreed a new nuclear arms reduction treaty after months of negotiations.
Yay!!
Quote :
"With this agreement, the United States and Russia - the two largest nuclear powers in the world - also send a clear signal that we intend to lead," [Obama] said at the White House.
"By upholding our own commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, we strengthen our global efforts to stop the spread of these weapons, and to ensure that other nations meet their own responsibilities," he said.

That's lovely news
Now if we'd only decide to scrap the Trident renewal and, I don't know, spend the money on something we need like the NHS.

The details of the agreement are less than encouraging, really. First, Russia has a godawful track record when it comes to nuclear security. Unless they immediately destroy and properly dispose of that 30%, we can almost expect some of them to go to other countries, and possibly terrorists.
At least this means the production rate to replace old warheads (many often have a fairly short shelf life) should go down. So, in the short term, this could actually make the world far less secure, but in the long term it could help.

The agreement also calls for cutting by about half the missiles and bombers that carry the weapons to their targets.
Wait, what? It'd be nice if they were clearer about this. The US has been using strategic bombers like the B-52, B-1 and B-2 in more tactical roles with conventional bombs for decades. That's the nice thing about having a big intercontinental bomber: You can load it up with smaller, laser-guided conventional bombs, and it will stay up there all week without having to come down to refuel and reload. This provides ground forces with a 911 line to close air support. It's a very nice thing to have in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I think I'd feel safer if Superman were handling this.

Yeah... There is this...
Pretty much all we can do is try and be optimistic about it all... Still, as a cordroy-trousered, sandal-wearing, basket-weaving, mung-bean-eating loonie leftie, I can help but be otimistic that something is being done... Somthing is better than nothing I guess...
Anyway, I'm off to get my rosy-tinted specs adjusted...
