| Link. - Quote :
People whose homes are an easy target could be woken in the middle of the night by police who are promising to try windows and doors in a bid to cut break-ins. Code-named Operation Golden, householders in Cheshire who fall foul of their checks will be roused with a lecture from officers on what they could have lost. I'm sure there's no way this could backfire. - Quote :
- Insp Gareth Woods, heading up the operation which begins in Macclesfield, admits some people will not be happy about the early hours wake-up calls.
He said:?"If we're told to get lost then that's a risk we take. It's a difficult balance to strike. The bottom line is officers get a mixed reception when doing anything like this, but I say to any of my officers that if they see an insecure car or house to let the owner know, no matter what time of day or night. "Most reasonable people will say thanks for letting them know and be grateful." Yeah, because a reasonable reaction to somebody trying to open your window or door in the middle of the night is to say "Thank you sir, may I have another dick in my ass?" The sheer potential for abuse is frankly horrifying. It's not like it's hard to impersonate a police officer. "Your house is unsecure. I'm going to need to confiscate your TV and jewelry so you learn your lesson." And that's assuming the cops are honest. Not to mention tying up 999 with panicked calls from someone who wakes up to someone breaking into their house in the middle of the night. Especially since: - Quote :
- He added: "Obviously we will be very discreet and won't be trying every door. We will target areas where we have intelligence burglaries will be happening."
No, nobody's going to do something stupid in panic because their neighborhoods have a high burglary rate. - Quote :
- The operation, which will be rolled out across east Cheshire, is a response to nearly 40 per cent of all burglaries being through unlocked doors or open windows.
Blaming the victim just got 40% more fashionable! - Quote :
"Most of them don't care if anyone is in the house. Even if the family is in the next room watching TV, the criminal will walk in, grab a bag, purse or some other item of value and be out again in seconds. Why, it's almost as if there is no risk whatsoever to a criminal when they break into someone's house! I wonder why that could be. It couldn't possibly because any attempt by the homeowner to resist would almost invariably be punished more harshly than the criminal trying to steal their stuff, would it? Well, it's okay. They're just out to steal things. It's not like they'd hurt someone. Oh wait.

| I was going to say that this would end in police officers getting shot. Then I realized it was in the UK. | |

| I'm honestly flummoxed as to why a simple, friendly note in the mail to those at increased risk of burglary wouldn't be an infinitely better - and probably cheaper - solution, and a much more efficient use of police manpower.
I mean, what with police officers going out and commiting fake break-ins of unsuspecting citizens' homes, they aren't going to be out stopping REAL crimes, or catching REAL criminals.

Cops might not get shot, but they could get stabbed or beaten up.

BUT THAT GUY'S WINDOW IS A THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITTYYYYYY I once got woken up by a sheriff passing by at 4:00 a.m. who informed me that the garage was open. I don't know about you but when a sheriff knocks on your door in the middle of the night, the first thing you think is "who died". About had a heart attack being as I was the only one home at the time.

| Okay, I'm all for campaigns to raise awareness of the risk of burglary and informing the public about how to avoid being burgled, but this takes things a step too far. As for older less secure windows, haven't the government realized that for many of us the effects of the recession are with us, and that many of us cannot afford to do major home improvements right now. It isn't the fault of the burglary victim, it is the fault of the burgler who comes in to rob something. If they would put more people in jail for burglary instead of focusing on community punishments then perhaps it would be a better deterant. Problem is that the government won't build more prisons because the loony Labour Party believes that jail won't work. I can't wait for the general election to get the idiots who come up with bullshit like this out of office. The sooner we get the Conservatives in the sooner money-wasting schemes like this will come to an end. Police belong on the streets fighting crime, not conducting fake burglaries and waking innocent people up in the middle of the night to lecture them about security. All this is going to do is pull police officers away from jobs that they should be doing. Seriously, these people make me sick. Whoever came up with this idea really needs to be fired. | |

Fine. The UK is an Orwellian hellhole where personal rights are virtually non-existent and everyone just goes through the motions of living. Outside of talk radio, only three songs are ever played, and two of them are by Lady Gaga; this is because everyone is taxed to hell and outside of taxes the cost of living is still insane. It's all a socialist plot to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Wrong wrong wrong wrong Wrong wrong wrong wrong You're wrong (TL;DR: As far as re-offending rates are concerned, community punishments are at extreme worst as effective as jail, and are statistically usually a damn sight more effective.)

| *Officer about to "educate" a house notices someone about to break into the house next to his*
"Evenin' Govnah, you working this Operation Golden beat as well?"
*Burglar stumbles out of surprise and quickly hides knife behind back*
"Uh, um, yes I am. I consider it a great honor to help educate our fellow Britfags about the felonious rabble that prowl the streets at night."
"If I might ask, why aren't you wearing a uniform?"
"Realism's sake and all that. My Lieutenant said that it's more convincing if a man wearing a ski mask breaks into your house."
"Splendid idea, I'll have to inquire about that after I'm done here. It's been nice chatting with you, but I'm afraid we both have work to do. Have a nice night."
"You as well."
*Both break into the houses* *Five minutes later, officer's radio comes on*
"There's been a report of a break in at 1604 Britfag way. Any available officer in the immediate area is asked to assist."
"Hrm, I'm at 1602 Britfag Way. That house is right night door!" . . .
"Bloody fucking hell."

Not a realistic house number in the UK. If you're going to insult another country, do the research.

If you're going to insult another country, do the research. But I take it Britfag Way is a realistic street name. And here I was thinking the British lacked a sense of humor.
