Yeah. He's almost already a woobie (excepting the whole racism thing). I read a biography on him and was all "awww" in several parts (he loved him some kittens!)(sure, he named one of them an ethnic slur, but KITTENS! And ice-cream! Even though it made him sick, because he had some sort of diabetes-like thing going). He became more tolerant later, I think. Not of ice-cream. But immigrants/Jewish people/black people/et. al.

Lovecraft was no more of a racist than anyone else who lived in that era. He was married to a Jewish woman for nearly two years, and as Toastuh pointed out, he became more tolerant as he got older and learned more about the world beyond where he lived.

Most people at the turn of the century, even ones who claimed to be 'progressive,' tended towards being racist (and sexist). It's impossible for us to understand that this was the norm, because we've grown up in a world where such behaviors are viewed as ignorant and backward.

Unfortunately, you can't rewrite the past to make it politically correct.

PS: Mark Twain was racist as well. And while Lincoln may have freed the slaves, he didn't really view them as being on the same level as white people, believing that, at most, they could be taught simple trades to support themselves and their families.

No, no. He was quite an ass. Even after marrying his Jewish wife he continued to make rather crude remarks about her and her family and his racism got horribly worse after they moved to New York. Not to mention he hated everyone (especially asians and the dutch). Even if you were white you still came under fire from him. not to say the man wasn't a brilliant writer but some of his works suffered immensely from his blatant racism.

He didn't really get better so much as moved away from the big city he hated so much. He was definitely worse than most people were at the time.
