Musta been cousins of them folk-hatin' Heavy Metal Huskies... It's a hell of a way to go, though. There's no mention in the article but the way I understand it they're checking for evidence the coyotes were rabid because they tend not to attack people. I've listened to some of her tracks on line and she was very talented. I recommend checking some out. Rest in peace, kid.

| Coyotes aren't just hungry for your pets anymore.
Now they've tasted human flesh.
Also: People need to stop hiking alone.

| I read about this earlier today, and damn, that's sad. She shouldn't have gone hiking alone, no, but like Knorg said, coyotes don't usually go for people.

| I honestly couldn't wrap my head around this for a second. Coyotes are tiny! About the size of a beagle. Two of them brought someone down? They had to be very determined, and as mentioned, possibly rabid. | |

| Reminds me of that guy in Canada who was killed by a pack of wolves and everyone saying "oh no, wolves wouldn't ever kill anyone." | |

What coyotes have you been looking at? There are a lot of coyotes in my area, and I can assure you that they're pretty good-sized--about the size of a moderately large dog, if often skinnier. I've seen them many times, though none have ever threatened me (one did pee on my tire, though).

They were all between 30-40 lbs, about the size of a medium-sized dog. According to Wiki, that's on the higher end of average. They might appear larger to you because they're tall and lanky, but once you get up close you realize that they're actually lightweights.

Maybe the ones I've seen are just better fed (or maybe they just appear that way from a distance--I'm sure not getting close to one if I can avoid it; they may not make a regular habit of attacking adult humans, but I don't want to meet the one in a hundred who might think I was a tasty meal). Or maybe it's the comparison with a beagle that threw me off--I adopted a new dog this summer and the beagles I saw in the shelter (before I ultimately selected a friendly little cockapoo) weren't very big. Then again, maybe they were puppies.

Are you saying an adult beagle couldn't do some damage if it wanted to?

Then again, maybe they were puppies. It does depend on the beagle. The ones I see at the vet clinic are obese as hell. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] And mostly the comparison was facetious. I was just expressing surprise that two animals of non-substatial size could kill an adult woman.

Are you saying an adult beagle couldn't do some damage if it wanted to? Get one in the cockpit of a Sopwith Camel and you'll have one mean WWI flying ace on your hands.

| I have to admit, when I first saw this thread, I thought it referred to the coyotes who smuggle people across the border and who are known to get violent if crossed. It is very unusual for coyotes to attack, much less kill, an adult human. They are known to attack small children, who look like easy prey (and may be easy prey if an adult isn't watching closely), but adults are usually too big for them to make a try for. However, if the coyote is rabid, there's a good chance they'll be more aggressive. They're also likely to be more aggressive if they're starving, though if they live anywhere near humans, starvation isn't likely, as they'll eat pretty much anything--garbage, pet food, pets, livestock, garden produce, etc. I once saw a coyote in the downtown area of my town at rush hour who went right up to a little kid, snatched a McDonald's bag, and ran away with it. The kid cried, but better the coyote took the McDonald's bag than trying to take the kid. | |

| Just spoke with a woman I know who works for Wolf Park, the local wolf and other wild canine preserve here in Indiana. I asked her if she'd heard about this and she pulled a face and said yes, and she's highly suspicious and thinks there's something missing from the whole story. She shared my skepticism about two coyotes being able to down and kill an adult person. Either the coyotes got extremely lucky and nicked an artery, or there's more to the story.
She also thought that the possibility of rabies is highly unlikely due to the fact that there were two together. If they were rabid, they wouldn't have been with it enough to hunt together, or would have turned on each other.

| God, can you imagine how fucking PAINFUL that death must have been?
But yeah, two coyotes? That's a bit off. A pack I can believe, but just two? They aren't too bright, and rabid ones wouldn't exactly be in the best of condition for hunting.

| Given that she (according to the CNN website) "loved nature", and is a singer (no less than a folk singer), a career not known for attracting the best and brightest, I think it is logical to assume that she squealed "ZOMG! LOOK AT TEH PRETTI PUPPIES" and kneeled down to pet them/rub their tummies, and was surprised when they decided to go for the carotid. | |

| I'm wondering if something else didn't kill her and then they ate part of her body? I mean it's been known to happen. Not saying that coyotes are fluffy and nice but I live in a area with the little buggers running around like they own the place and no one has ever been attacked. | |

| Maybe she was attacked, tried to run, fell down, and that's how the two coyotes got her? Especially if they could strike at the throat? | |

Two is a pack. - Quote :

Actually, coyotes are some pretty clever bastards. There was a pack in eastern Washington that would lure male dogs out with a female coyote, and when the dog came up to screw it, they'd jump it and eat it. - Quote :

Or she tried to run, they got her legs and took her down.
