| And, predictably, no one knows where he is now. - Quote :
- The search continues for an Eastern
State Hospital patient committed for murder who escaped from facility staff during a trip to the Spokane County Interstate Fair on Thursday.
The sheriff's helicopter is also involved in the search for Phillip A. Paul. Deputies say Paul is mentally unstable and could attack without provocation. Lovely. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]However, this guy didn't just wander off from his field trip, apparently... - Quote :
- Authorities say they believe the
escape was planned. Sgt. Dave Reagan of the Spokane County Sheriff's Office says he was told a pair of socks and a pair of underwear were the only clothing items Paul left behind in his room at Eastern State Hospital. For that reason they assume he took clothing with him. Reagan says he was also told Paul had been ordering packaged food items while at the hospital. So, he's now on the run.
- Quote :
- Office notified the media that the most recent photos of Paul could be found on his MySpace website. A link to his MySpace site is provided to the down and to right of this story under the "Also on the web" section..
I wonder who has him as their Myspace friend.... Quick, everyone, check your Myspaces!

- Deputies say Paul is mentally unstable and could attack without
provocation.
They say the chances of an attack increase the longer Paul goes without medication. The Department of Social and Health Services says Paul receives his medication by injection, and it keeps him stable for 14 days.
DSHS says doctors gave Paul his last injection Tuesday or Wednesday. So, how did this guy make his daring escape?
- Quote :
- On Thursday, hospital staff took
a group of patients on an annual field trip to the fair. Deputies say Paul walked away from the group around 11 a.m. but say Eastern staff waited nearly two hours before notifying authorities of the escape.

Now, what did this Myspace-using, field-trip-escaping, ticking-time-bomb of mental instability actually do?
- Quote :
Paul strangled 78-year-old Ruth Mottley of Sunnyside in 1987 and buried her outside her home. He told investigators that voices in his head lead him to believe the victim was a witch who needed to die. Paul was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to Eastern State Hospital. Authorities believe Paul may be heading back to Sunnyside, where his parents still live. Well, isn't that just wonderful.

| Why was this guy even allowed to go to the fair in the first place?
I mean, if he is insane, he probably won't appreciate the fair enough to justify the expense, if he isn't, he should be in prison for murder, and thus not going to the fair.

| I'm wondering why they let him out to the fair in the first place too. IMO, a murderer that mentally unbalanced doesn't really deserve to go to a carnival. | |

- Members of an employees union put out a statement saying they had long opposed such field trips.
"They believe he was an extreme escape risk and the administration should never have allowed him on the field trip," the statement from the Washington Federation of State Employees said. "The workers have unsuccessfully fought to stop the outings for murderers, rapists and pedophiles committed to the hospital as criminally insane." "Oh I'm sure this pedophile will be fine going to a place with lots of little children!"

Except that whoever thought letting rapists and pedophiles go on field trips where they can possibly escape is insane.

| Insane paedophiles are people too. People with needs. Needs like the need to have access to young children and the need to go on roller coasters.

I don't think it's a matter of deserving, exactly. He's mentally ill. The problem is that he's obviously a risk to the public. In this situation, keeping him locked up seems to be more a matter of public safety than punishment. I also agree with the people who have questioned whether the field trip would even do him much good. It's possible that the stimulation could do more harm than good for a lot of the patients.
