- Holley Mangold‘s road to the Rio Olympics will go through “The Biggest Loser.”
If you don't know who Holley Mangold is, I have a picture of her. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]There we go. - Quote :
- Mangold, who placed 10th in the super heavyweight division at the London Games, said the NBC weight-loss show reached out to her. Now, she’s a contestant on the series’ 15th season beginning Oct. 8.
I wonder how that phone call went. "Hey, Molly! It's NBC. Listen, we think you're a colossal fat ass and were wondering if you wanted to embarrass yourself on national TV in the name of making us some motherfucking money." "Sounds good, I need to pay for reinforced chairs somehow." - Quote :
- Her starting weight is 351 pounds. She weighed in at 346 pounds at the 2012 Olympics, 60 pounds heavier than anybody else in her weight class, which is set at 165 pounds and over.
I need to stress to you how pitiful it is that she got blown out of the water by people who weighed 60+ pounds LESS than she did. That's like Mike Tyson getting KO'ed by Floyd Mayweather. - Quote :
- “I feel like that was my limiting factor the last run for the Olympics is I was too big for the super heavyweight,” said Mangold, the sister of New York Jets all-pro center Nick Mangold who played high school football. “I needed to be smaller so I could train harder.”
Yeah, her stomach was probably getting in the way of her pulling the bar up in a straight line. Did Mikey make a thread about a mediocre reality show run by clueless goddamn morons just in order to make fun of a fat girl? Yes, yes Mikey did.

1.) She's a "weightlifter." This is the term used to refer to Olympic style (clean&jerk and snatch) lifting. This is stupid, because powerlifters (squat/bench/deadlift) lift more weight, and weightlifters produce more power. But these people don't listen to Mikey because they've taken one too many barbells to the head. 2.) The Super Heavyweight powerlifters are fat as fuck. The SHW Oly lifters less so, it seems, for reasons I don't quite know. That being said, apparently all that extra fat didn't help her lift for shit, because she got destroyed by people significantly lighter than her (though she was deadling with a nagging wrist injury). 3.) The pants-on-head-retarded way TBL goes about getting these fatties to lose weight is certain to harm her lifts. Low instensity steady state cardio and crash starvation diets are the things of pure retardation, and yet that's what these "fitness professionals" prescribe to the witless fat asses on the show. It might be the fastest way to lose weight inside of the time frame of a season of a TV show, but this isn't conducive to long term weight loss, increased physical performance of any measure, or improved health. The best thing for these fat fucks to do is to steadily lose weight while lifting weights to get stronger. But it's hard to turn that into a reality show. The best thing for the fat fuck competing at the Olympics is whatever improves her ability to pull up heavy ass weights REALLY fast. I don't know exactly what that is, but that a bunch of significantly lighter lifters dwarfed her shitty lifts may indicate that losing some goddamn weight is the way to go.

| So someone who had trained for the Olympics has to have some TV people who got a degree in weight loss from a three week internet class tell her how to train to lose weight? | |

...is that supposed to be some kind of contradiction? She trained to lift, not burn fat.

| I just think that someone who has had the mental ability to train into the Olympics doesn't need TV people telling her how to get into a lifestyle of health. | |

...not TV people, no. But this is a case of comparing apples to oranges. Her ability to pick up heavy things doesn't have much of anything to do with health.

The ability to pick up heavy things usually correlates to pretty good health. Of course, most people who lift heavy things are not themselves so goddamn heavy light can barely escape. As for why she's doing reality TV to lose weight, it probably pays better than 10th place at the Olympics. Simply losing weight is easy, just eat less food. The Biggest Loser turns it into a comedic spectacle with laughably ill-advised methods like having colossally fat people run all over the place. And then they wonder why they end up with leg injuries. tl;dr The only people dumber than Mangold and the other contestants are the fucking idiot trainers and producers.

| I'd often thought that if I ever ended up on the show I'd start slowly displaying stereotypical anorexic/bulimic-type behaviours just to see how long it took them to notice. | |

| May I remind everyone that Rulon Gardner, former Olympic wrestling champion, was on Biggest Loser not too long ago. Mind you, he quit after 16 weeks "for personal reasons". (Surprising as he lost 173 pounds in that time and likely would have won going away, but hey, it's his life.)
I don't really see this as anything different. She'll lose enough weight to get back to a competitive level and then leave.

I don't really see this as anything different. She'll lose enough weight to get back to a competitive level and then leave. 1.) Former. As in, his strength doesn't matter much anymore to anyone but him. Mangold is putting future competition at risk. Which is fine, if she wants to do it. I'm not sure she isn't deluded into thinking that this silly bullshit won't wreck her lifting though. 2.) "Personal reasons" sounds like "injuries relating to all of the stupid shit they have fat asses do that seem tailor made for grinding your joints into dust."

As in, his strength doesn't matter much anymore to anyone but him. Actually, Gardner stated in 2011, after his stint on Biggest Loser, that he was considering a comeback for the 2012 Games. I don't know what, if anything, came of that, but it strongly implies that he didn't consider further competition out of the question. (Although that does lend credence to your theory on why he might have left. Wrestlers need their joints in good working order.)
