Without crackpipes.
They can either swallow the rocks whole or they need to whittle their own crack pipes like MEN. Or fashion crack pipes out of the bones of other prisoners that can be found littered about after the Warden's weekly shenanigans.

What IS gruel anyway? I always got the idea that it was some kind of oatmealish slop, but is there like, a specific recipe for gruel that I've just been missing all these years?

| In related news, a teenager has begged a judge to let him out of the pokey because he didn't like it and the judge fucking let him out. Oh gods. - Quote :
- The boy had given the magistrate no option but to send him to detention because he refused to accept the conditions of conditional release.
But when the reality of detention set in, his tough demeanour evaporated and he pleaded with the Childrens Court to let him out. And Judge Brad Farr SC, reviewing the sentence, decided he should indeed be released.
Not so cocky now, are you, you little shit? - Quote :
- Judge Farr found the teen was given several chances to accept a conditional release order.
So let the fucker suffer in detention! Goddess above and below, how do you know the kid's not just crying crocodile tears to get out of jail? Besides, even if he wasn't, as I've said before jail is meant to be unpleasant. Let the kid stay there for six months and see how much he'll be willing to muck up after that. - Quote :
- Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie has been removing ``perks'' from youth detention centres. Bucking bulls, jumping castles and scuba-diving lessons were scrapped in May.
"Our youth detention centres are not meant to be fun places. I want anyone sentenced to a period in detention to never want to come back,'' Mr Bleijie said yesterday. Hear, hear.

| I find it more gratifying than exciting. What's gratifying about it is the fact that those who go out of their way to destroy or steal property, terrorize innocent people and generally behave like raging cunts are getting put in jail to get a taste of the real world and learn about what society expects of them. They're not there to suffer horribly, but they're not there to have a teddy bear picnic either. If your town had the same crime problems as mine right now, you'd see what I mean. | |

Yes, they should be overweight cripples leeching government handouts while whining about their back and acting superior to people who actually contribute something useful to society. - Quote :

Spoonman lives in Philadelphia. It's a city that only slightly better than Detroit and slightly worse than Baghdad as far as crime goes.

| Are people in Philadelphia constantly getting their houses broken into even while they're at home in the afternoon? Do the judges keep letting the offenders out on bail and letting them off with a slap on the wrist? | |

Well, I have a friend who went to Temple for a semester and transferred out when she got mugged three times in one semester, on-campus. So let's say yes. No offense meant, Doob, but this seems to kind of be the point you're making anyway.

Probably. And then there are the roaming packs of Eagles fans that set upon areas like swarms of locusts, leaving only ruin and misery in their wake.

I dunno, ask my coworker who had his front door kicked down and then he got held at gunpoint while two other guys took his stuff. - clopper wrote:

It depends on how you define a "slap on the wrist" considering America has this thing where once you get in the system, even if it's for relatively minor offenses, they have a tendency to try their damndest to keep you in the system especially if you're poor and black. Which is part of why I'm hesitant to accept your idea of putting children in "real, adult prisons" or anything like a "real, adult prison" because in America prisons are shitholes that don't prepare you for the real world. In fact, a lot of people who go to prison become so used to prison culture they can't adapt to life on the outside, which is part of why they end up going back to prison. I mean, if I would've been caught selling oxy or shoplifting or tagging or putting cherry bombs in someone's mailbox or whatever other bone-headed shit my friends and I used to get into when I was a kid and sent to a "real, adult prison" where my options might have been either join the Neo-Nazi's or my name is "Peaches" who knows what I'd be today. Rather than just another Special Education major. Centuries upon centuries of precedent demonstrates that being "tougher" on crime doesn't necessarily fix the problem. If anything, it often makes things worse. And frankly, I don't believe juvie is the paradise you're making it out to be. Prison and crime tend to be areas where politicians get hyperbolic when they're going for that whole righteous crusader thing that makes the voters check next to their name on a ballot.

And frankly, I don't believe juvie is the paradise you're making it out to be. Prison and crime tend to be areas where politicians get hyperbolic when they're going for that whole righteous crusader thing that makes the voters check next to their name on a ballot. Australian prisons are very different to American prisons. The kind of hellish overcrowding you speak of isn't an issue over here, largely because alcohol and drug-related offences are dealt with through programs like MERIT. Youth offenders who break and enter, shoplift, etc., though need to be shown that "this is what happens in the real world if you muck up". Aside from the jumping castles and whatnot, juvie and adult prison both provide educational facilities (kids in juvie don't miss out on schoolwork and adults can do tertiary education while they're inside). Auschan's /b/ has some rather colourful characters who can tell you more about what jail down under is like, since I've never even been arrested let alone jailed and therefore have no first-hand experience of state or federal prisons.
