You're not. I live in a state that's got two major colleges whose football teams have been locked in a rivalry since the first turf was laid. I've seen first-hand what dipsticks who are firmly convinced that their team and their school is the greatest in the known Universe can do, and it's just as stupid. For some people, sports is their religion, and just like a religion, they'll forgive it anything, up to and including sodomizing young boys.

Yeah, the football program shouldn't have been punished at all. The loss of scholarships and games is fucking pointless and stupid. NOTHING anyone even peripherally related to the child rape had any affect on the results of games.

Those games were legitimately contested with qualifying athletes and won fair and square. The NCAA, which is a fucking idiotic organization for a number of reasons other than this, can go fuck itself.

Funny side note: There is now a game between Ohio State and Penn State that has been forfeited by both sides.

No one's getting their scholarships yanked. It means that Penn St. will lose whatever open scholarship slots they had and that they won't be allowed to replace x number of players who use up their eligibility, via recruiting and/or transfers.

I'm surprised no one is commenting on the real "unprecedented" punishment: the $60 million fine. That's gonna hurt more than everything else put together.

Players and players families receiving cash or benefits for their playing jeopardizes the integrity of "amateur" competitions. Child rape does not. Now, I'm still not sure why those so deeply involved in covering up what they knew was a felony don't face criminal investigation. THAT is how this should be handled. Innocent students and football players are being punished because of an overemotional response to something that they had NOTHING to do with and knew NOTHING about. The NCAA just went after Penn State because people broke the law. That's sets a fucking retarded precedent. Now, every time some dumb fuck gets arrested on a weapons charge, they'll either have to punish the school, or admit they overreacted to Penn State for the sake of PR and feeling important.

The fine is the smartest part of the punishment. The scholarship loss is defensible, but that's 20 fewer scholarships out there for prospective college athletes, once again punishing people who don't deserve it. Forfeiting wins is just fucking stupid and it jeopardizes the integrity of every fucking competition the NCAA puts on with, and this part is important, no fucking upside. None of the victims are better off because of it. All it does it cause innocent players who used to be able to say "Hey, I beat goddamn LSU in the 2010 Capital One Bowl" or shit like that who can no longer officially do it. It's just another attempt to pile on a dead guy because it's easy "Hey look at me and how outraged I am" points because he can't defend himself.

Honestly, as I understand it, they could have, and should have, fined them more. That's how you fuck the upper administration officials who covered it up.

Reportedly, the judge responded to criticism of the sentence as "too lenient" (He could've gotten up to 400 years) by saying 400 years was a ridiculous sentence, as there's not way Sandusky could do even a quarter of that. But for a 68 year-old man, 30 years is a virtual life sentence.

I'm not sure what sickens me more-his speech, or the fact there are still people who support him and believe he's totally innocent. Because, you know, all those young men would risk their futures by coming forward and lying about having been sexually abused.
