| Today, a gunman by the name of James Lee entered the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring and took three hostages. He may or may not have been wearing explosives at the time and has since been shot and killed by police. So far, I haven't found any reports of hostage deaths.
CBS ABC WaPo
Lee also has a website called Save the Planet Protest (since taken down, but I think is still cached on Google--and if not, I CP'd it, so I can post it in the thread if anyone's interested) where he says, among other things, that "Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation." and "All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs’ places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it."

| Here's some highlights of what he wanted. My favourite? - Quote :
- 5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)
I don't know how the Discovery Channel will achieve that.

| Keli, according to the report I read, there were no casualties amongst the Discovery staff. Someone even went so far, when they realized what had happened, to break out the windows of the attached day care center and evacuate the children to a nearby McDonald's.
Appparently, this guy had been sending letters to Discovery for years. There had, in fact, been a restraining order against him (for hiring a bunch of homeless people to picket them and disrupt traffic). Unfortunately, it expired two days ago. One sort of gets the feeling this was inevitable.

I don't think I should find that as funny as I do.

| Hardcore CFer? Sounds more like a member of the Human Extinction Movement to me. The "no more children" part doesn't seem to stem so much from the dislike of children, but from general misanthropy because HUMANS ARE POLLUTING THE PLANET BAWW [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Also: Malthus? Really? While the man did have a point (more humans with equal amounts of food = bad), his theories are somewhat dated. For one, the overall global fertility rate is decreasing slightly each year. For another, he did not predict new technologies that would significantly increase the yield of food production since his time period, a criticism which has been levied since the 19th century. The current food shortages in some areas of the world are primarily due to inequalities between countries (after all, most don't just give food away out of the goodness of their hearts, and while there are donations of grain by the US and some European countries to African nations, it's just not enough) and transportation issues, not to the fact that there is not enough for everyone overall (as it says in the second link, "Calories produced per day per capita globally went up 23% between 1960 and 2000, despite the world population doubling during that period."). Of course, if the population was still rapidly rising, a delayed Malthusian catastrophe wouldn't be out of the question, since even scientifically efficient food production does have its limits, but as it is, we're probably gonna go extinct due to warring with each other or natural catastrophe (such as the Yellowstone caldera blowing its top - hel-looo ice age!), not because we don't have enough to eat. And from Zo's link, I really liked this quote: - Quote :
- Just the fact that he thinks the channel of "American Loggers," "Deadliest Catch," "Dirty Jobs," "Ghost Lab," "Swamp Loggers," "Pitchmen" and "Shark Week" will be his allies in his crusade to end the blight of humanity suggests there is something wrong in his head.
Pretty much says it all | |

| wat Okay I support VHEMT and can... almost see how his logic makes sense? But then he's being totally batshit about it, and seriously, having kids or not is a personal choice D: - Quote :

So, uh, what would said programs even be like? Just "HUMANS ARE PARASITES" over and over? Because that's what it sounds like from what he's saying.

And that's on top of the fact that much of the aid that is sent isn't getting to afflicted areas due to various human elements (government officials holding the aid for ransom until organization pays "extra fees", plain ol' bureaucratic red tape tying things up, warlords hijacking shipments for his own armies, etc.)

| I get an impression he wasn't a fan of shows like (Jon) and Kate Plus Eight or the one about the Duggers (I can never remember the name). I'm not overly fond of them either, so I simply don't watch them, and I can't think of any other Discovery Channel shows that could be seen as glorifying having lots of babies. On the other hand, the Discovery Channel weren't encouraging Jon and Kate or the Duggers to have more children either; they were simply documenting what life's like when you come from a large family. The difference is, the kids shown had enough money to live a good life. If they'd been born in a third world country, the parents would be lucky if they ended up with two or three kids who lived to grow up, due to poverty, lack of decent medical care, lack of food, disease, etc.
On the other hand, they wouldn't have to worry about their parents turning their family life into a three ring circus for money's sake.
