Who gives a crap about Betelgeuse? Bellatrix is the cooler star.

I highly doubt that we will get to see the supernova explosion of Betelgeuse any time soon. I could be wrong, but so far it hasn't been in any newspapers so it's probably one of those urban myths.

Thanks for the heads-up, I hadn't realized Betelgeuse was a potential candidate for a supernova. Any local life-forms had better get the hell out of Dodge. They can all come here and work in McDonalds.

-The Anti-Spirals did it.
-The Q Continuum are having another civil war.
-Disaster Area are holding a concert in the Betelgeuse system.

They're just saying "Tomorrow to 100,000 years" in that they don't really have any idea of when it's gonna happen, just that in star terms Betelgeuse is near the end of its life.

And as for devolving into a black hole, that will take a few hundred years too, so even when it does blow there's no need to worry about black holes.

And even if it did affect us, which it won't, it would take another 600 years or so for any effects to reach us.

And when I say, "It wouldn't make any sense", what I mean is, it would take us eight minutes to see it was gone, but would it take us eight minutes for the planet Earth to fly off into space (as in, taking eight minutes for the effects of gravity to reach us)? I watched a documentary on it once.

"Betelgeuse may have already burned out and we don't know it" has been showing up in popular science books for a while.

I hope the light from its explosion reaches us within my lifetime. The prospect of witnessing the death of a star is sort of romantic in a way.
