Yeah that was my first thought, but it also said that the mother handed over the remains to the father, which implies they weren't buried. And I'm not sure of the laws concerning dead bodies- do you have to bury or cremate them? Can you keep them? Can you eat them? In any case, I really have no fucking clue what the law is in Japan.

According to Wikipedia, 90% of all funerals are done in the Buddhist Style, even if the deceased was not necessarily a Buddhist. This consists of a wake, cremation of the body, formal burial in in the family grave, and a short service. Apparently, in recent times, scattering the ashes somewhere the deceased was fond of has become fairly common, but most people are still buried in a family plot.

So I think this couple here has violated a whole lot of laws, both legal AND social.
