Reepicheep and I got to talking about how we wish we could talk about literature with a group of people. The best way to do this is to form a book club (or drop a few hundred bucks on a community college class) I compiled a list of six books from a fairly diverse selection of authors. For our first book club, please vote on a book in the list by 6/9.

Feel free to pick one you have not read or maybe one you read in high school/college, but would like to revisit with an older set of eyes. For synopses, just look up on amazon. Or wiki. You know what to do. We can tear these books apart, laugh at them, question the author's intention, yadda yadda.

How the book club works: when we decide on a book, I will put together a reasonable reading schedule along with open-ended questions.

I also encourage people participating to bring in some interesting materials (historical/cultural context, literary criticism pieces, etc.) to get as much as we can from these books.

I vote "The Fountainhead" because it's the only one I haven't read and it should be a blast

Toni Morrison! She's amazing, and I haven't yet read Beloved!

I voted for The Fountainhead for this reason; I haven't read it since high school, and I remember hating Atlas Shrugged (and stopping after a few hundred pages) but thinking that The Fountainhead was vastly superior as a book, even if I disagreed with the philosophy. I was torn between it and Beloved but I read that one last year and it's still pretty fresh in my mind.

Also, this is a fantastic idea!

Hey Eevs, if you're still taking suggestions for the book list after this one like you were in chat, can I make another suggestion?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] seems like an interesting guy to tackle. I've never read him but I've heard good things about him, and Southern Literature is just lovely.

I'm particularly interested in "The House Behind the Cedars". Books about passing always seem to spark interesting discussions.

Or even the book "Passing", by Nella Larson. But then, I think most people have already read that. At least, most people I've talked to.

Sorry, but I love thinking ahead....

Eh, if that's the book I think it is, I was less than impressed, but I haven't picked it up in a while, either.

Going with Portnoy's Complaint - I remember being entertained by it.

I personally think that "The Fountainhead" pales in comparison to "The Jungle". Ayn Rand is rather famous for writing snorefests, and I found the book to be much more of the same.

Oh, so here are two discussion norms that I think would be helpful before we jump into book club:

1. Feel free to scrutinize the material, but please reference. You can cuss at it, call it total garbage, praise it as the best piece of literature known to the written word... But please reference the text in some way or nobody's going to want to work with you.

2. If people try to be just awful, ignore it. Y'all are bright and can differentiate between a post that furthers the conversation and one that is the equivalent of a 23 year-old man trying to get people to look at his scrotum pressed against a restaurant window.

As it stands, there is a possibility that there will be a tie. If it comes to that, I'll roll some dice or something.

We'll be covering the book for about 3-4 weeks depending on speed and flow of discussion. Expect a few questions per week, respond to whichever ones you'd like.

When does it start, in case I need time to get the book out of the library?

I wanna read The Jungle! And make sure that we talk about it before dinner for the largest amount of people!

I hate Amy Tan's books. I can't put my finger on why though.

Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan.

I will officially start the book club on Saturday 6/15. Be on the look out for a reading schedule sometime tomorrow. Happy reading!

Apologies for the late reply (busy couple of days)

Okay, so, lets sort of start off slow to get a feel for the book. The first three chapters of any book can sometimes be awkward as your imagination tries to grip some kind of visual for the characters and setting, while the plot may not be as clear as early.

So, read up on the first three chapters of the book by Monday 6/17. I will post the first questions along with a brief overview of characters and their relationships with each other. I may even do that sooner. Very exciting and can't wait to dive into this one (:
