I love comics. And I've been sharing more and more of them in my posts as of late. So I've decided to create this thread to share my love of them, and so we'e got a place for generic comicstalk.

But mostly so I can share various awesome sequences from comics, such as the above panel from Avengers Assemble #11.

Captain Marvel up there is demanding the clothes of, specifically, Tony Stark and Hulk, because the pair of them made a bet a few issues earlier. The two of them both set about tackling a task, and the first to complete it won, the loser would have to walk, naked, from Avenger's Tower to Avenger's Mansion. (Originally the bet was that the loser cough up $100,000, but Bruce pointed out that he doesn't exactly have that sort of money lying around. Also In the above panel, Tony just starts dropping them before being told why he's supposed to.)

On to controversy and discussion meat. Spidey up there is the Superior Spiderman. (Hence the small eyes and the non-typical spidey pose in the "drop your pants" panel.)

I'm a pretty shameless Marvel Zombie. I don't like DC. However, if you were to ask me to recommend my top 3 comics as literary classics, I'd reel off three DC titles: Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come.

Hell... A Marvel title wouldn't appear for another 2-3 recommendations, at least.

BUT.

If you were to ask me to recommend just plain AWESOME comics - well, it's pretty much Marvel all the way. And the top three picks would be Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet.

Which brings me to another point. Obscure comics trivia.

That character up there, who Hulk is SHOTGUNNING for. That's US-Ace, nee US-1.

A marvel comics character whose entire run lasted less than 12 issues, and whose only purpose was to advertise a toy truck.

No. Really.

Any other comics group would forget about him. (Like DC did with The Guardian a character created simply to rip off Captain America, but who tunred out to be hideously unpopular. Or of The Protector Who was literally a way to have a comic run from two different publishers, only one of whom has access to the licence for Robin.) But not Marvel. US-1 keeps coming back, keeping the same backstory (involved in a trucking accident, has a plate of metal put in his skull that alows him to pick up radio waves, CB transmissions and "computer waves") As demonstrated here:

And goes on to fight crime using gadgets and high-tech gear he builds himself (he's a tech genius, you see, he just really likes being a truck driver). Later his truck becomes a Space Rig, and he moves his family into space where they open an intergalactic truck stop.

I am so not kidding.

Re: the last page: aw hells yeah, I have the 2 Strange Tales trades and the 2 basically-the-same-thing from DC AND 2 trades that are roughly the same deal for BPRD. I am so shamless about that kind of crap. I would recommend any of those.

Also, I personally think X-23 has a lot of untapped potential. Sadly, it hasn't been put to use (superweapon becomes teenage prostitutewat?). But I would like to see her in the hands of a good writer. And an artist that lets her dress like a human...

Sorry Doobs, thought I'd answered you already! All the buzz is that it's... average. I haven't read it myself, but that it's not horrid is a bonus.

New stuffs.

While I love comics, I can't back away from some of the bathit insane, offensive and sometimes plain evil things they do. Especially to women.

The Captain Marvel story no one talks about for example. Tigra and Skrull-Pym - which lead on to Tigra getting sexually assaulted by The Hood*, who videotaped the whole thing which was later released on fucking youtube. The entire premise of Identity Crisis and what happened to Sue Dibny.

*What Hood did To tigra was never confirmed as rape/sexual assault - although it was definitely physical torture. This was, however, handled much better than Cap.Marvel, and became a pretty good story in Avenger's Academy.

Like the worst tropes out there, women in comics are raped because it is "something bad that happens to women" and women are beaten and/or killed simply to spurn a male character into a fit of "heroic" rage.

Well, recently DC has decided to kick it up a notch. In the comic book lead up to a video game called "Injustice: Gods Among Us." (A DC Fighter using the Mortal Kombat fighting engine) well...

So... A while back, DC announced Adventures of Superman

A series of comics written by a whole host of writers and existing outside of mainstream continuity.

The writers included Jeff Parker, Chris Samnee, Max Landis... And Orson Scott Card.


Orson Scott Card.

Mr. Card is, if you don't know, a fantastic example of the need to separate Art from Artist (A stance that is HUGELY problematic, but that's a discussion for someone's Humanities Degree)

Author of massively influential sci-fi series Ender's Game, Card is also a titanic homophobe who has given his backing to DOMA (Defence of Marriage Act) and other anti-gay activist groups, including NOM (National Organisation for Marriage).

This tends to be the essay people go to... and includes gems like:

To say that DC's decision irked some people is a bit of an understatement.

This Opinion Peice is pretty powerful if a little dabateable in some of it's claims:

But, congrats in getting a big-deal Superman Comic out in time for the Man of Steel movie, and you have an issue with Orson Scott Card's name on it, just in time for Enders Game to hit the big screen too. But I'm sure that didn't affect your decision at all.

Meanwhile, in the Marvel universe, Rictor and Shatterstar finally came out of the closet, the Jean Grey School of Tomorrow, the Runaways and the Avengers Academy have a couple of LGBT-students running around, the Young Avengers relaunched with a gay couple as their own little flagship-pairing, oh, and, yeah, Northstar just got married to his boyfriend.

He got paid to redesign host Rider. He did so, got paid, end of contract. The thing about this that is funny is the only not-shit characters Liefeld ever created are only good because of changes other people made to them after the fact. *cough*Deadpool*coughcough* If his characters were all kept true to his orginal intentions none of them would have survived past the 90s.

So.... Spawn....

I've actually been trying to get into Spawn, or at least understand the appeal of Spawn. And I still don't get it. I don't think I've ever heard a single human say they don't like Spawn, but... I think it's all really bad.

I've been reading the comics from the beginning and the whole affair just seems so... tryhardy. Like, it's trying really, really hard to be dark and edgy but it just kind of comes off about as edgy as one of the "dark" episodes of "Law and Order: SVU". Spawn himself just kind of kills people and broods. The dialogue is awful. No characters are particularly likeable. The clown is fucking annoying.

Am I missing something? Does this comic get better? Why do people love Spawn?

Also, Todd McFarlane recycled a lot from his time doing Spiderman. And I can't get over his style of FUCKING CAPES! CAPES AS LONG AS CITY BLOCKS! CAPES! CAPEEEEESS!

I never got into Spawn... The most I was ever "into" him was that godawful movie (which, when I was 13, was the most awesome thing EVAR, second only to Guyver Dark Hero)

The only person I knew who did like Spawn, was also into Chaos comics... And he loved them For other similarly teenage reasons.

Well you are SOL then because Spawn was basically created to play to McFarlane's capes'n'chains fetish. The huge all over the place cape is actually his super power.

IDK, there were a few ideas I liked, but it is pretty flawed as well. I agree about Violator, what a shitty bad guy. Sooo annoying. I liked Spawn becoming the defender of the homeless for a while. I liked that straight-guy cop, the not-comically-gluttonous one. I enjoyed the fact he was a secret badass. The overall plot seemed needlessly convoluted. I never really understood what Satan, or whatever Satan-equivalent was in Spawn, was actually trying to do. The art was pretty good in some ways and pretty terrible in others. It was not as bad as Leifeld's stuff; which is not saying much, but at the time Spawn was created Liefeld and his hoard of imitators were way more common than they are today.
