I love comics. And I've been sharing more and more of them in my posts as of late. So I've decided to create this thread to share my love of them, and so we'e got a place for generic comicstalk.

But mostly so I can share various awesome sequences from comics, such as the above panel from Avengers Assemble #11.

Captain Marvel up there is demanding the clothes of, specifically, Tony Stark and Hulk, because the pair of them made a bet a few issues earlier. The two of them both set about tackling a task, and the first to complete it won, the loser would have to walk, naked, from Avenger's Tower to Avenger's Mansion. (Originally the bet was that the loser cough up $100,000, but Bruce pointed out that he doesn't exactly have that sort of money lying around. Also In the above panel, Tony just starts dropping them before being told why he's supposed to.)

That lead to this scene:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

HULK NOT WANT PICS ON INTERWEBS!

Which lead to this:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

On to controversy and discussion meat. Spidey up there is the Superior Spiderman. (Hence the small eyes and the non-typical spidey pose in the "drop your pants" panel.)

Spoiler:

...

Also this can be a place to recommend comics.

I'm a pretty shameless Marvel Zombie. I don't like DC. However, if you were to ask me to recommend my top 3 comics as literary classics, I'd reel off three DC titles: Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come.

Hell... A Marvel title wouldn't appear for another 2-3 recommendations, at least.

BUT.

If you were to ask me to recommend just plain AWESOME comics - well, it's pretty much Marvel all the way. And the top three picks would be Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet.

A comic that starts with this:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And goes on to include this:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Which brings me to another point. Obscure comics trivia.

That character up there, who Hulk is SHOTGUNNING for. That's US-Ace, nee US-1.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

A marvel comics character whose entire run lasted less than 12 issues, and whose only purpose was to advertise a toy truck.

No. Really.

Any other comics group would forget about him. (Like DC did with The Guardian a character created simply to rip off Captain America, but who tunred out to be hideously unpopular. Or of The Protector Who was literally a way to have a comic run from two different publishers, only one of whom has access to the licence for Robin.) But not Marvel. US-1 keeps coming back, keeping the same backstory (involved in a trucking accident, has a plate of metal put in his skull that alows him to pick up radio waves, CB transmissions and "computer waves") As demonstrated here:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And goes on to fight crime using gadgets and high-tech gear he builds himself (he's a tech genius, you see, he just really likes being a truck driver). Later his truck becomes a Space Rig, and he moves his family into space where they open an intergalactic truck stop.

I am so not kidding.

Speaking of minor characters...

And. Of course. There's the retro comics. Did you know that the high-five was invented as a way for undercover Nazis in US military bases to Seig Heil without getting caught?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

90% of Nazi spies were caught in this exact way.

Dispite Cap's best efforts, the Nazi's were defeated through co-operation and teamwork:

Here, Captain America is off to help Captain Britain, whose magical/technological supersuit has been stolen by Mordred. Cap A and Cap B are trapped in a dungeon which is collapsing.

TEAMWORK!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

"I'm not a good follower, yank, but I'll be right by your side" *patriotic tear*

So. There you have it. Comics, everyone!

Ask, post, moan, complain, promote, whatever! Comics are awesome.

Re: the last page: aw hells yeah, I have the 2 Strange Tales trades and the 2 basically-the-same-thing from DC AND 2 trades that are roughly the same deal for BPRD. I am so shamless about that kind of crap. I would recommend any of those.

I may have to hunt down some Doom Patrol scans, my boy bestie has been 'borrowing' my copies for like 2 years now. I just love strange shit.

I will never forgive DC for what they did to Stephanie Brown. So cruel and mean spirited.

Also, I personally think X-23 has a lot of untapped potential. Sadly, it hasn't been put to use (superweapon becomes teenage prostitutewat?). But I would like to see her in the hands of a good writer. And an artist that lets her dress like a human...

Oh man, Pet Avengers was the only reason I paid money for comics while it lasted.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Ms. Lion, the cross dressing dog owned by Aunt May. Gives no shits about gender.

Quote :
Some fans hate it. I fucking love it.

I hate the idea because they're now just laughing in my face about my OTP at this point (thanks Marvel for having Mary Jane confess her feelings. Also, screw you.) AND the fact that Otto was going to marry Aunt May, still has feeling for her, and has had sex with her. Now he's in the body of the man that she raised from childhood. It feels to much like incest to me.

Also they've already done the "dress like Spider-Man to prove that you're better" with Kraven the hunter.

Sorry Doobs, thought I'd answered you already! All the buzz is that it's... average. I haven't read it myself, but that it's not horrid is a bonus.

New stuffs.

While I love comics, I can't back away from some of the bathit insane, offensive and sometimes plain evil things they do. Especially to women.

The Captain Marvel story no one talks about for example. Tigra and Skrull-Pym - which lead on to Tigra getting sexually assaulted by The Hood*, who videotaped the whole thing which was later released on fucking youtube. The entire premise of Identity Crisis and what happened to Sue Dibny.

*What Hood did To tigra was never confirmed as rape/sexual assault - although it was definitely physical torture. This was, however, handled much better than Cap.Marvel, and became a pretty good story in Avenger's Academy.

Like the worst tropes out there, women in comics are raped because it is "something bad that happens to women" and women are beaten and/or killed simply to spurn a male character into a fit of "heroic" rage.

Well, recently DC has decided to kick it up a notch. In the comic book lead up to a video game called "Injustice: Gods Among Us." (A DC Fighter using the Mortal Kombat fighting engine) well...

This happened:

So... A while back, DC announced Adventures of Superman

A series of comics written by a whole host of writers and existing outside of mainstream continuity.

The writers included Jeff Parker, Chris Samnee, Max Landis... And Orson Scott Card.

Orson Scott Card.

Mr. Card is, if you don't know, a fantastic example of the need to separate Art from Artist (A stance that is HUGELY problematic, but that's a discussion for someone's Humanities Degree)

Author of massively influential sci-fi series Ender's Game, Card is also a titanic homophobe who has given his backing to DOMA (Defence of Marriage Act) and other anti-gay activist groups, including NOM (National Organisation for Marriage).

This tends to be the essay people go to... and includes gems like:

Quote :
When I was an undergraduate theatre student, I was aware, and not happily so, how pervasive was the reach of the underculture of homosexuality among my friends and acquaintances. After a while I stopped being shocked to discover that someone I had known well, or whose talent I admired, was either moving into or already a part of the not-so-clandestine network of gay relationships.

[...]

One thing is certain: one cannot serve two masters. And when one's life is given over to one community that demands utter allegiance, it cannot be given to another. The LDS church is one such community. The homosexual community seems to be another. And when I read the statements of those who claim to be both LDS and homosexual, trying to persuade the former community to cease making their membership contingent upon abandoning the latter, I wonder if they realize that the price of such "tolerance" would be, in the long run, the destruction of the Church.

Oh yeah...

In This interview he pulls out this little gem:

Quote :
“I find the comparison between civil rights based on race and supposed new rights being granted for what amounts to deviant behavior to be really kind of ridiculous. There is no comparison. A black as a person does not by being black harm anyone. Gay rights is a collective delusion that’s being attempted. And the idea of ‘gay marriage’ — it’s hard to find a ridiculous enough comparison. By the way, I’d really hate it if your piece wound up focusing on the old charge that I’m a homophobe.”

Homophome and, arguably, racist to boot. So, an all-around great guy to write Superman, huh?

To say that DC's decision irked some people is a bit of an understatement.

10,000 people signed an online petition to get DC to drop Card

This Opinion Peice is pretty powerful if a little dabateable in some of it's claims:

Quote :
Bigotry is not an opinion

I think it is, actually. It's an unacceptable opinion, but it is one.

Quote :
Imagine if Card had previously made comments about how great segregation was, or how he believes it's his right to own slaves. Imagine if Card had gone on lengthy diatribes about how all women should be expunged from the work force and shoved back into their kitchens, where they belong. What if Card was on the board of directors for a group dedicated to keeping interracial marriage illegal?

But you can see where the author is coming from.

Quote :
However politicized gay marriage has become in this country, I remain firm in my belief that it is not a political issue. Taxes are a political issue -- this is a human issue. Orson Scott Card has the right to hate whomever he wants, and he has the right to fight for inequality all the livelong day. But when an opinion crosses the line into actively damaging the quality of life of a sizable chunk of the population, it becomes indefensible. It becomes bigotry.

And the big one:

Quote :
Orson Scott Card can write all the science fiction he wants, creating the worlds from scratch and molding new characters to fit his outlook on life. That's his prerogative. He should not, however, be allowed to come anywhere near pre-established superheroes like Superman, who possess a single, unifying trait: an overwhelming compassion for all human beings and the desire to fight for their survival and rights. This is not a political statement. This truth goes beyond political leanings.

He also brings up a good point. In recent years, DC has really courted the LGBT community, and continues to run Batwoman, an openly lesbian superheroine. So their hiring of Card is quite bizarre.

Eentually, DC released a statement, and it's every bit as limp-wristed as you'd espect it to be

Quote :
“As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that — personal views — and not those of the company itself.”

What a wet fucking fart of an excuse DC. And a good deflect. Card isn't representing DC, you're right. He is WORKING for them, and writing Superman.

This guy who literally believes that Gay Marriage spells the end of fucking civilisation...

Quote :
the politically correct barbarians will have complete victory over the family -- and, lacking the strong family structure on which civilization depends, our civilization will collapse or fade away.

Is writing Superman, DC's, and probably the worlds, most iconic superhero.

But, congrats in getting a big-deal Superman Comic out in time for the Man of Steel movie, and you have an issue with Orson Scott Card's name on it, just in time for Enders Game to hit the big screen too. But I'm sure that didn't affect your decision at all.

Meanwhile, in the Marvel universe, Rictor and Shatterstar finally came out of the closet, the Jean Grey School of Tomorrow, the Runaways and the Avengers Academy have a couple of LGBT-students running around, the Young Avengers relaunched with a gay couple as their own little flagship-pairing, oh, and, yeah, Northstar just got married to his boyfriend.

Much to Rob Liefeld's chagrin

Quote :
“… I have nothing against gays, I have gay family, nuthin’ but love here,” he wrote on his message board (registration required). “Ditto gay characters if that’s what their true origins are.

“As the guy that created, designed and wrote his first dozen appearances, Shatterstar is not gay. Sorry. Can’t wait to someday undo this. Seems totally contrived.”

[...]

Later he added, “Shatterstar is akin to Maximus in Gladiator. He’s a warrior, a Spartan, and not a gay one.”

Although, to be fair, In this case, Liefeld isn't pissed that one of his characters is turned gay so much as he sees ShatterStar as his character, and thinks that he should have control over him. (Which is nonsense, because he crated the character for Marvel, he's their character - something this guy found out the hard way.)

Liefeld - not a homophobe, just an idiot.

[edit] - And with reference to the Geeks of Doom article - that one is wholly in favour of the artist in that case. For the record, I'm not. Marvel were in the right. He got paid to redesign host Rider. He did so, got paid, end of contract. If he cared so much about collecting royalties on the character, then why let it sit for nearly 20 odd years, and only get your dander up when the Nicholas Cage Movie turns up?

I've actually been trying to get into Spawn, or at least understand the appeal of Spawn. And I still don't get it. I don't think I've ever heard a single human say they don't like Spawn, but... I think it's all really bad.

I've been reading the comics from the beginning and the whole affair just seems so... tryhardy. Like, it's trying really, really hard to be dark and edgy but it just kind of comes off about as edgy as one of the "dark" episodes of "Law and Order: SVU". Spawn himself just kind of kills people and broods. The dialogue is awful. No characters are particularly likeable. The clown is fucking annoying.

Am I missing something? Does this comic get better? Why do people love Spawn?

Also, Todd McFarlane recycled a lot from his time doing Spiderman. And I can't get over his style of FUCKING CAPES! CAPES AS LONG AS CITY BLOCKS! CAPES! CAPEEEEESS!

I think it's people's opinion of spawn quite literally being able to 'eat' sin, and be about as immortal as a god that can't be killed except complete annihilation of his body or having his head cut off, considering how fast he moves... not gonna happen quickly or easily.

Reid, are you drunk?

[edit for content]

I never got into Spawn... The most I was ever "into" him was that godawful movie (which, when I was 13, was the most awesome thing EVAR, second only to Guyver Dark Hero)

The only person I knew who did like Spawn, was also into Chaos comics... And he loved them For other similarly teenage reasons.

Anyway... Have a SpiderWoman panel.

Well you are SOL then because Spawn was basically created to play to McFarlane's capes'n'chains fetish. The huge all over the place cape is actually his super power.

IDK, there were a few ideas I liked, but it is pretty flawed as well. I agree about Violator, what a shitty bad guy. Sooo annoying. I liked Spawn becoming the defender of the homeless for a while. I liked that straight-guy cop, the not-comically-gluttonous one. I enjoyed the fact he was a secret badass. The overall plot seemed needlessly convoluted. I never really understood what Satan, or whatever Satan-equivalent was in Spawn, was actually trying to do. The art was pretty good in some ways and pretty terrible in others. It was not as bad as Leifeld's stuff; which is not saying much, but at the time Spawn was created Liefeld and his hoard of imitators were way more common than they are today.
