So, maybe you've been nosing around music on YouTube, and you happened to come across a comment that looked exactly like this...

Virgorougespam wrote:
I'm a better musician. I'm a vocalist, multi-instrumentatlist, composer, who is self-taught but I had 20 yrs of training. I trained at Curtis, rating higher than Julliard in the US. It's the premiere music school in the US I taught myself many things but I know it takes years of extreme hard work, training and CREATIVITY to be excellent at music. The commercial world is so out of it. They don't think it takes extensive training. It takes self-education and extensive training.

Well, after seeing this comment on nearly every video I came across, ranging the course of a variety of artists I finally decided to bite. I took the bait. And I was greeted by this....

Holy Indigo Child Batman. Considering that the video is almost 10 minutes but feels like 15, let me give you an abridged version...

Virgorougeabridged wrote:

Woah. That's deep, brah.

Other collected wisdoms of Virgorouge...

So, based on what I know, she's been trained in music for twenty years and she's not a club-joiner and she can draw a straight line. Let's see where all this got her, musically...

20 years of musical training? Still all comes back to sailor music.

She sure likes harpsichords...

RECTANGLES ARE SECRETELY TRIANGLES!

So basically, true beauty is Emilie Autumn playing elevator music? Cool. You learn something new every day!

I guess she also can't grasp the concept of irony because she rants about the Illuminati lizardmen trying to shut her down but all comments on her videos have to be approved and I think she disabled the ability to dislike her videos (if YouTube can let you do that, I dunno, none of her videos seem to have likes or dislikes).

God, remember when she was good? Like okay fair enough the quality of her music was always uneven but remember when it felt like she was trying, at least? It was all downhill after Un/laced.

Also I'm gonna go ahead and call shenanigans on this girl ever having attended Curtis or indeed even stepped foot on campus. I know people who have gone to Curtis and their drunken improvisations sound nicer than anything this girl's got online. She's not even in key half the time and whatever piano/harpsichord/keyboard bullshit she's got going on there is...I don't even know. Either the damned thing is broken and playing all of the notes a quarter-tone flat or so, or she's making an incredibly inept attempt at utilizing dissonance for its' own sake without adding to the song in any way. Schoenberg she ain't.

(Edit: having listened to a few more songs, your mileage may vary re: the shittiness of whatever keyboard she's using. It's all pretty bad though.)

tl;dr she's pretty much a broken musician and would be laughed out of even the most minimally competent conservatory, let alone Curtis or Julliard.

All that said, I kind of like some of her visual artwork. It's appealing, somehow. I like that rabbit. But I ain't exactly blown away, either.

The most I've ever heard of Emilie Autumn is really in passing, sorry. But I do know she's just given up on anything but throwing soggy biscuits at her audience these days.

Well, she could be one of those people that's very good at performing but horrible at being creative. Like that hairy virgin who can play "Eruption" on guitar note for note but when you ask him to come up with something new the results are usually lame and uninspired and sound like stuff you've heard a billion times before.

I don't know much about conservatories and what they expect from their students, but I was always under the impression they pretty much focused on grooming their students into performers. As long as you showed technical proficiency and were able to play "Große Fuge" or whatever, you could get in and graduate. Though it still is odd that Virgorouge doesn't seem to be putting any amount of technical proficiency in anything she's doing, especially for a Curtis graduate. Her piano playing is simplistic, often relying on very basic rhythms with clumsy transitions between the few chords she's using. And I certainly hope she wasn't a vocal major. Because her voice is just utterly awful. It's like she's trying to be Enya, but can't because she has no sense of tone or pitch.

Does anyone know who attempted to go to Curtis, but was denied because she was black?

At first, as a violinist, it was really cool to see someone who isn't Andrew Bird attempting to branch out from classical. But recently yeah it's all about the wacky outfits and set-pieces. She doesn't even play the violin live anymore. Which is a shame because she's certainly got the chops.

That's the thing: I'm not a conservatory student but I am a musician, and I have played with and learned from conservatory students and teachers and I can tell you for a fact that no matter how terrible any of their voices were, they could still carry a tune. There is no way anyone with any measure of professional musical training would think that those kind of vocals would fly. They're not just bad, they're wrong.

Similarly, most conservatories make you take at least two years of piano lessons, and honestly what she's playing is easier than even the basic training your average music student goes through on a keyboard. Call me a snob, but I'm not sold on her having any kind of university-level musical education.

Though you're right about the pedagogy being very performance-based. I have my qualms with that but that's a conversation for another time Smile

I'm mostly interested by the strong feminine gender perspective she seemingly puts into a lot of her lyrics, which has always been largely homogenized throughout the history of popular music, and fairly nonexistent or even unspoken-rule-reviled in a good chunk of underground music (or pop music too, even). I could go on about how both metal and punk have always expected their female musicians to assert the same form of sexless hyper-masculinity endemic to both scenes, sometimes to degrees even more spectacular than their male counterparts, to be taken seriously as an artist (the ultimate irony being that female punk and metal groups still often get treated as some kind of gimmick to be patronized to especially when they've sufficiently proven that they're just "one of the guys"). So I like that she seems to be coming from a fairly unique lyrical perspective, even if some of her lyrical themes seem to tend towards rather cheesy language and references that are only relevant if you're A) a person from the Victorian era, or B) a goth who thinks you are.

But I kinda got over the whole "goths playing updated pseudo-classical/cabaret" thing years and years and years ago, which is partly to do with plain old overexposure, and partly to do with my dissatisfaction to prevailing lyrical and visual themes that, like I said, I find outdated, irrelevant, and cheesy. I can enjoy it, I can enjoy any music from most genres, it's just one of those styles where my long-term tolerance is fairly low.

I actually find something to admire there. The sheer level of idgaf in Virgorouge is fairly admirable, it's punxcore. I find something rather liberating and even inspired in the whole, "I don't care if my piano is out of tune and my voice is awful I'm playing anyway goddammit" attitude. We can't ignore that this attitude has given us some real coolness.

Not only that, but considering how the music industry is, apparently, filled with Illuminazi, she's probably certain to avoid the industry. That's either great dedication or supreme stupidity (or both) to just completely reject the only way an artist can make money by playing all their own material. Or Reep is right and she really IS just super-bitter now that she's probably just realized art doesn't necessarily always reward being genuine and principled.

But I do respect overall how genuine she appears. Even if she does genuinely suck.

And she might just be awful at both vocals and piano and no amount of training she may have gotten could've fixed that. And she might have not majored in vocals and piano and decided to go all piano/vocals just because she likes it? I dunno.

A person can be quite successful while people can think they're kind of shitty at what they do

But really successful people ignore it.

So if you're Virgorouge, take that as a hint. If not, wow we got a rabid fan how cute

Justin Bieber probably gives no fucks as to how many people hate him or his music for whatever stupid reason

Or rather, Rasputina probably didnt give a shit either.

Oh my gods and brickbats, I remember this hack from way back when! Except she was calling herself "Marissa Marchant" at the time. I guess that name isn't special enough anymore, so she's calling herself "Virgorouge" now.

Oh, and she was selling CDs of her music. Only $1000 a pop!

Look her up. She has a LONG and COLORFUL history, and I'm delighted she's continuing to provide us with entertainment.

She can't, though.

And most hearing people would agree with me.

Seriously, her website says she studied Bel Canto for a decade at Curtis and if that were true she would not be as tone-deaf as she clearly is. However, even assuming that to be true, Bel Canto is a specific style of vocal performance, and just because she can sing that way does not mean she can necessarily sing without that particular technique (which is incredibly distinctive even to the untrained ear, example below:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

She may be the best Bel Canto singer in the world but that does not carry over into pop singing. She's singing from a part of the throat that is physically different than the one she has spent years training, if she has. Sort of like how the fact that her mother is a piano teacher doesn't carry over into her own playing.

Tell you what. Seeing as Marissa was trained Bel Canto, that tells me she's probably a soprano. That puts her at about the same range as my violin. If she can post a video of her competently completing an aria (any aria for solo soprano, or whatever her range may be) then I will A.) post a matching recording on the violin (provided I can find sheet music/you can provide it) and B.) lay off your girlfriend forever. It's perfectly fair: this way your girlfriend (your love? really?) and I both have an outlet to show how un/talented we are and so saying sway the crowd.

Deal? Good, because until then I'm going to keep coming up with rhetorical, unfavorable comparisons for you to impotently debunk.

She's what would happen if Amanda Palmer was born deaf and got hit by a car as a child. She's the hydrocephalic Fiona Apple.
