| There seems to be an unstoppable urge amongst fanfic writers to take characters out of their canonical setting and put them...somewhere else. Most of these fics are crap, especially the ones that shoehorn the characters into a run of the mill modern high school. Nevertheless, a few gems appear every so often. For example:
Elementary, My Dear ObiWan
A Star Wars/Sherlock Holmes crossover set in 19th century London. The characters are in character, the plot makes sense, and the whole concept really, really works.
Stories of Us
A Hunger Games fic set during World War I. Again, the characters are themselves, the story is plausible, and it's good reading.

The Author's notes weren't really needed, but the writing was very well done. And I loved the Mrs. Hudson twist! Tried to read the Hunger Games one, but I don't know the fandom and it kind of lost me. This one, I offer hesitantly, because it's a RPF, and I know that's very squicky to a lot of readers. Victims of Ourselves This is an AU, based on the Marvel Thor movie, where Loki, when he enters into the void, instead of going to Thanos and his mates, he comes to Earth. He accidentally meets up with Tom Hiddleston, who is about to leave for New Mexico to start filming Thor. It's not work safe and features a rape scene, so be warned, but the characterisations of Hiddleston and Loki are extremely well done, it's well written and there's a lot of humour in there. I found it a very touching story.
