SUMMARY:A/U: Jack Dawson is the new 25 year old art teacher at West Philadelphia high, and when 17 year old Rose Bukater lays eyes on him she immediatley knows there's a spark between them. Set in 2012; give it a chance? ;D
It's bad news right from the start. Let's name the problems that immediately come to mind:

1.) It is, if not illegal (the age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16), then extremely unethical for an adult teacher to have a romantic relationship with an underage student.
2.) It's unethical even if no laws are being broken and will likely result in the teacher being fired and losing their teaching credential. The student will wind up with a damaged reputation, at the very least.

Now, some things to snark:

Quote :
A pair of black skinny jeans with a blue and white short-sleeved plaid shirt finished with an old pair of converse. Her family was rich, yet she dressed like the odd one out. Everyone skipped around in their black pant suits and pencil skirts and then there she was, dressed down constantly, sticking out like a sore thumb. She liked it though. It gave her some sort of orginality amoung the waves of people around her.
Rose is a Mary Sue! She likes to stand out by looking like every other teenage girl.

Quote :
Her mother was always telling her to go to a private school,or even be homed schooled, and whilst other would jump at the chance Rose wouldn't. She preffered the blissful seven hours away from her hectic homelife.
If a parent wants to send their child to a private school or homeschool them, the child really has no say in the matter. Being all defiant wouldn't mean a damned thing.

Quote :
She was finally entering grade eleven; and she was going to do it with confidence.
Bolding mine. Remember what I said about ethics? It's even squickier when the student has two goddamned years to go in high school.

Quote :
Caledon - or better known as Cal - was Rose's boyfriend who was thirteen years her senior with an extremley well-paid job.
In 1912, a relationship between a teenager and a 30-year-old was acceptable. In 2012, it's squicky, to say the least.

Quote :
He was managing director at Hockley enterprise . The job that kept them together. The job that made her mother adore the pants off of him.
Sounds like Mom's hedging her bets. If Rose doesn't marry him, Ruth can crawl into bed with him herself.

Quote :
"You are being extremley rude today, Rose. You know that Cal must see you alot since you two are together. You know he has to make room in his schedule just to see you? Do you know how much of a fuss that must be for him?"
This guy sounds like he's married to his job. WTF is he doing with a teenager who would rather not be around him?

Quote :
Rose knew exactly what she was getting at. Her father, Arthur Bukater, was deathly sick...he was succuming to the effects of leukmia and was slowly departing from the world which broke Rose's heart even more than it already was. The fact was, his death wouldn't be too bad for the family, if he wasn't the source of their wealth. The thing was, Arthur was keeping them up to scratch in everything from their house to their fancy cars and if he were to die then all of that would be swept away from them. So, thus the reason Rose was forced into a relationship with the tremendously rich Caledon Hockley.
So, Rose's father is dying, but he hasn't bothered to make a will. Well, that'll enrich the lawyers, anyway.

Now it switches to Jack's POV:

Quote :
But he was extremley nervous. What if he messed up? What if he said something innapropriate by accident?
What if he does something inappropriate, like falling for an 11th grader?

Quote :
He'd expected atleast one argument to break loose; but they were all well-behaved and once they took their seats they stared at him in total concentration.
Total concentration? The only time I've seen a roomful of students stare at a teacher with total concentration was when my 7th grade Civics teacher tripped over her shoelaces, fell on her face, and exposed her underwear to the class.

Quote :
"I'm Mr. Dawson your new art teacher," Jack stated cooly "I'll be teaching you guys for the next year. Maybe even the year after that.
Not if you get caught fucking a student, you won't.

Quote :
He'd only moved up her for more job opportunities and he was not dissapointed when this job offer popped up to him.
Teacher's a man-ho!

Quote :
He still had one more class to teach, one more class until he could retire to his bed at home.
It's 2 PM. Does he suffer from a sleep disorder? Also, a teacher's work day doesn't end when the kids go home--next comes grading, making lesson plans, talking to parents, etc.

Now back to Rose's POV:

Quote :
Curiously, she glanced up at the clock. She half expected it to be 1:45 and nearly time for her next lesson but it was, infact, 2:30. She jumped up grabbed her bag, keeping a tight hold of her novel, before rushing out of the library door and waving off the librarian.
This school must not have bells telling the students when to go to class. Also, she stole a library book. No

Quote :
She felt all eyes on her as she suddenly dropped her book and three pens she was carrying in her hand. Suddenly, she didn't know what to do. Act embarresed?
She's half an hour late for class. Embarrassed doesn't begin to cover it.

Quote :
His sandy hair, tinted with browns and black streaks, fell over his eye in a careless sort of way and his lips...so manly, yet looking so soft to kiss. He truly did make her heart melt in a way that was strange to her.
I'll grant you that it isn't unusual or abnormal for a teenager to have a crush on a teacher, especially a young one. When my dad started teaching junior high at age 23, he could pass for a high school student and received lots of unwanted female attention. When I started working as a librarian at age 25, I got a fair amount of male attention. The key, of course, is for the teacher to step back and realize that responding to this attention would be inappropriate.

Quote :
He seemed to stare at her with equal fascination.
Idiot.

Quote :
He let out a long kept in sigh as he sat on one of the desks behind him. He'd wanted to keep her in there a little longer, just so he could stare at her beauty. When she'd walked into the classroom he'd felt his heart miss a beat; he'd been stunned by her. He remebered the look in her eyes that told him he did the same to her. He'd never felt all giddy over a girl, and when he did it had been a long time ago.
Somebody needs a cold shower and a smack upside the head with a cluebat.

Quote :
After a while of thinking he decided to carry on cleaning up. After all, Rose wouldn't have wanted anything to do with him. He was her teacher!
Did this guy skip the ethics portion of his training?

Seriously, this whole story is full of WTF. Teacher-student relationships are not cool, romantic, adorable, sweet, or any other word a person might use to make them sound nice. A teacher is an authority figure who has no business getting involved with a student.

Nice snark!

It seems like these stories are typically written by teenagers. I don't get why they think it might ever be okay, because when I was a teenager I understood how inappropriate a teacher-student relationship. Even if the person is no longer someone's teacher, a romantic relationship would still be wildly inappropriate, because the teacher will always have some authority over the student.

Quote :

She was finally entering grade eleven; and she was going to do it with confidence.

This seems really odd and makes it worse. From what I've seen of this type of fic, the student is usually about to graduate and they have feelings for each other but they don't act on them until the student is at least 18 or has graduated.

A Titanic fic in which Jack is a high school teacher and Rose his underage student
Yaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwnnnnnnnn.

Is that all they can write about? Worse, it's not even realistic high school, like the ones they actually have classes in, but high school filtered by a lifetime of high school drama clichés. It's BORING AS HELL.

You know what story I would like to read? The one in which Jack lives and then he and Rose get married and he has to put up with the snot and she has to put up with the guy who can't hold down a job.

The story has garnered some reviews, mostly cringingly fawning. This is possibly the worst:

I love this! I think teacher/student relationships are great, I always wanted one :D

What the fuck?
I mean, it's creepy if a relationship like that just happens, but to actually want one...

Not to mention the fact that they both would have to put up with the social consequences of being together like that in 19-bloody-12.

That might be interesting, but I suppose it requires research, and this is the one thing Suethors don't do.
