Auctorial meltdown at Big Al's Empty
PostSubject: Auctorial meltdown at Big Al's   Auctorial meltdown at Big Al's EmptyTue Mar 29, 2011 4:15 pm

At BigAl's Books and Pals, subtitled "Reviews and more from the world of the Kindle", we find a mixed review of The Greek Seaman, an indie novel by Jacqueline Howett:
BigAl wrote:
If you read The Greek Seaman from the start until you click next page for the last time I think you’ll find the story compelling and interesting. [ ... ] However, odds of making that final click are slim. One reason is the spelling and grammar errors, which come so quickly that, especially in the first several chapters, it’s difficult to get into the book without being jarred back to reality as you attempt unraveling what the author meant.

Jacqueline Howett, it seems, became acquainted with the content of this less-than-stellar review.

And Jacqueline Howett did not like:
Jacqueline Howett wrote:
You obviously didn't read the second clean copy I requested you download that was also reformatted, so this is a very unfair review. My Amazon readers/reviewers give it 5 stars and 4 stars and they say they really enjoyed The Greek Seaman and thought it was well written. Maybe its just my style and being English is what you don't get. Sorry it wasn't your cup of tea, but I think I will stick to my five star and four star reviews thanks.

She proceeded to follow this up by copy-and-pasting no less than three positive Amazon reviews into BigAl's comments section.

Al replied politely, explaining that his issue with the book had nothing to do with Ms. Howett's being English -- "I have doubts that Ms. Howett being English is the reason for my reaction to her writing although I can't discount it entirely. I can say that in the last year I've read and in many cases reviewed on this blog books by natives of England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and multiple European countries where English is not the primary language. Some have been full of country specific slang. In none of these cases has this been an issue for me" -- and adding, "I'll also point out that in the first two chapters alone I found in excess of twenty errors that ideally would have been caught in editing and proofing." He gives as example the following alleged sentence:
The Greek Seaman wrote:
Don and Katy watched hypnotically Gino place more coffees out at another table with supreme balance.

... and repeats that he enjoyed the story, but found it unnecessarily hard to read.

At which point Ms. Howett proceeded to lose her shit all over his Comments section. From there it only gets more and more entertaining, with Howett accusing BigAl of sockpuppeting in his own blog, and growing more and more incoherent (and entertaining) with every line she posts.

Highly, highly recommended.

I feel like I'm reading Fandom Wank... Except it's an original story. But wow, this is hilarious. Auctorial meltdown at Big Al's 453357

Look AL, I'm not in the mood for playing snake with you, what I read above has no flaws. My writing is fine.

Anyone who actually says that has no business being a writer. "MY WRITING HAS NO FLAWS!! MY WRITING IS FINE!! YOU'RE JUST A BIG MEANIE WHO WOULDN'T KNOW GOOD WRITING IF IT BIT YOU IN THE DICK! WHAAAAAA! LOOK AT ALL THESE OTHER PEOPLE WHO THINK I'M GREAT! THAT MEANS I AM!"

Looking at her picture makes it even worse. This is a grown woman, not a teenage fanbrat.

I was following the meltdown all day. They've closed the comments section on Big Al's (or at least they had when I last checked) but it got pretty crazy for a while. Suffice it to say that not all publicity is good publicity, especially in this case. When Neil Gaiman publicly proclaims, to his God-knows-how-many-thousand Twitter followers, that you're being stupid? Yeah, your career is basically hosed.

One interesting thing in this whole mess is that the fact Howett self-published has become a football for both sides of the aisle. At least a couple of commentators were saying "Yeah, no big surprise, complete lack of quality control" and bashing Howett. And the self-publishing crowd fought back, saying "Cripes, don't associate us with HER!" and bashing Howett. She has made absolutely no friends here.

Oh dear, it's like a train wreck, I can't look away but the injured have been carted off and the wreckage has been towed away. I almost feel sorry for her.

Stupid girl. Then again, Anne Rice got away with it--or wait, she didn't. Who still reads Anne Rice these days?

Being rich as fuck might provide some measure of comfort.

Do you have a link, perchance? =D

I laughed out loud when an Anonymous claiming to be from PublishAmercia said "*We* don't even want your book." Oh, I want to believe they were an actual representative of the publishing house.

Sorry, I'm not sure how to post links to specific tweets . . . here's some of what he said, though. (I actually learned about it from his feed.)

Okay, he didn't say straight-out "You're being a moron," but I kinda got that impression.

The possibility that she's contracted rabies can't be entirely ruled out.

Here she is reading an excerpt from the book in question. Even I couldn't make it all the way through the video.

Just read that entire comment section a few times over.

This summed up my reaction.
