Test Survey on perception of self and norms Empty
PostSubject: Test Survey on perception of self and norms   Test Survey on perception of self and norms EmptySun Oct 16, 2011 1:02 am

So I had this idea tonight in the bath. I want to test people's perception of characters / media and how they identify with a vaguely written character and insert their mental picture when details are lacking. I will be the first to admit that when I pick up a novel, I have a pretty ready visual image of the character I am reading, then when I read about a detail to the contrary (character is revealed half-way through the book to have red hair, or, turns out Blaise Zabini is male, not female) I often find the character "ruined" and cannot finish the story, or at least feel less attached to them. The ruining bit is another discussion for another day, but I am curious how others percieve vaguely written characters. If you have time, could you complete this survey?

Read the following short story, then answer the questions below. There is absolutely no right or wrong answer. This is a fictional story and the speaker is not me or related to me, the poster.

Quote :
The alarm blasted into my head at 7:00 am. I lay there in half-sleep, slowly bringing myself into consciousness and reality. I amused myself before stretching my legs about how it was kinda like the opposite of a lullaby. After several minutes of wishing for more time, and a few attempts to bury my head underneath the pillow, I ended my five-minute feud with morning and got up.

Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I yawned deeply, smacking my dry mouth and the bad taste it contained. I should have brushed my teeth last night. It took every effort to drag my feet out of bed. I was exhausted last night, and hadn't gotten nearly enough sleep. I fumbled with the light switch to the bathroom, brushing my arms in great swaths against the wall, hoping to catch the switch with my palm on the way in with one smooth action. I missed and had to re-do it. I'd always imagined some sort of internal audience cheering when I did cool things like catching a pencil after it rolls off the table or booing when I tripped and had to self-consciously turn it into some sort of half-dance move just to save face. Even when no one else was around.

I looked in the mirror, and I was taken out of my mind and thrust back into the present once again. I looked at the reflection of my dark skin and wished that my bathroom had a window to let in a bit of sunlight. I sighed. We shouldn't have argued like that last night. At least, not over something so petty. We should have stayed friends. My mind went over the scenario again and again, recalling each word said and how it should have been different. I wondered if things had changed beyond repair, now.

My alarm went off a second time. 8:00. I hadn't even eaten yet! I silently cursed as I grabbed whatever food I could find within reach after getting dressed and flew out the door. I wasn't going to miss the bus this time!

Thanks for both your responses. Did either of you skip the "dark skin" question because you saw no change? Sorry, for both I only see eight answers.
